Hi jay my name is james i am a newbie on the forum having recently purchased a G60 ,i have had a look at the underside of my car and it is in good condition for age but was not so impressed with the back axle and front subframe.I am wanting to do the same as you have done i noticed you were using genuine vw parts were these purchased from vw or from another source and roughly how much did it cost you to do including powdercoating etc any help would be much appreciated by the way your car looks very nice you are an inspiration to others.

Hi. Thanks for the kind words.

I bought all I could as genuine VW parts off eBay and then what I couldn't find in time I bought from the VW dealership. I would guess all told the front and rear end rebuild probably cost the best part of £700/£800, but that was replacing every single bush ball joint, mount etc..

Nice job on the cup holder Jay :)

Regarding using coilies on the front only, does that work ok with the standard fixed type rears? first time i've known anyone mix them like that, just curious rather than being critical. :)

Basically there is no difference between the two chap. Both are actually by definition coilovers short for "coil spring over strut". , its just that one has the facility to raise and lower the the height of the spring platform as desired, where the other does not. In order to do this and not clash with wheels, bodywork etc.. you need a smaller diameter spring, hence the different look.

This also means the strut body (cylinder) is shorter to allow for the range in drop and this is what I need, as the fixed damper is too long for my ideal front end height so the piston is not running in the preffered middle 1/3 of the cylinder stroke..

As long as the spring poundages are not a million miles out and you have a damping adjustment to allow you to match said springs, there is no reason you can't use either.

So long as the spring/strut method is the same on the same axle, it's fine. It's no different to Corvettes and MK1/2 Escorts running McPhersons at the front and leaf springs at the back :D

and weitecs basic coilover kit is coilovers on the front and a standard spring/shock set up on the back.

LOL, cheers no I don't work in the motor trade at all, just spent too many years tinkering with cars as a hobby. I dread to think the hours I spent on that car and I only sold it as it was just the right time to do it.

Is yours a metal or plastic rocker?

What is the part number on it, as I bought both gaskets from dealer not knowing what I needed and now know I have a metal rocker.

Mine is a metal rocker cover and the seal part number is 021 103 483D which I think is actually the wrong one.. Back to the dealers today.

I didn't buy the OEM bushes from one shop, I just bought them as they came up on eBay in general.
