Nick_Micouris 0 Posted March 25, 2004 Hello all Am getting a whistling noise when I start my car. Sometimes this is when the car is cold or hasnt been used much. Today the car was a little hard to start (seemed as the batt was nearly flat) and it was whistling for a while. Ideas anyone?? Cheers Nick
dr_mat 0 Posted March 25, 2004 Coming from where, roughly? Most likely culprits are any components on the aux belt.
Nick_Micouris 0 Posted March 25, 2004 yeah seems to from around there/alternator. Could the alternator be straining due to the batt being low? Cheers Nick
dr_mat 0 Posted March 25, 2004 Don't see why it would whistle, unless the bearings were messed up or the belt was slipping. You're sure it's not our old friend the belt tensioner?
stormseeker 0 Posted March 25, 2004 Sounds like the belt tensioner bearing to me!
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted March 25, 2004 Sounds like the belt tensioner bearing to me! Seconded! Alternators whine, PAS pumps moan/grind and tensioner bearings whistle...... HTH K

Kevin Bacon 5 Posted March 25, 2004 Yeah get the bearing changed ASAP otherwise it'll seize solid and the plastic pulley will melt away. Get a long socket extension bar and use it as a stethoscope and just confirm it's definitely that before parting with any cash. Or you can remove the pulley and check it. Get a 15mm socket and turn the nut clockwise to loosen as it's a reversed thread. Then stick a long 8mm bolt (B&Q sell them) into the threaded hole on top of the alloy tensioner housing and screw it down until the tension is taken off the belt. Take the pulley off and spin it by hand. If it's stiff and / or grindy, the bearing is shot. K

Nick_Micouris 0 Posted May 21, 2004 Where can you get the replacement bearing from, then? VW said you can only get the whole assembly which is pricey. I have actually changed the whole thing but still have my old tensioner but it has a worn bearing. Is the tensioner worth hanging on to?
dr_mat 0 Posted May 21, 2004 Yes! PhatVR6 has a box of replacement bearings and is looking for a tensioner assembly with a good pulley to use so he can swap these on an exchange basis.
dr_mat 0 Posted May 21, 2004 BTW - I got an 8mm bolt from B+Q and it wouldn't fit!? It seemed to be very slightly too wide? I was confused, to say the least!
Nick_Micouris 0 Posted May 21, 2004 we did it with a 13mm bolt was 8mm a typo or are there different pulleys around? will contact PhatVR6 now, thanks dr_mat!
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted May 21, 2004 The bearing details are in the stickied thread in Servicing. It's like CD rip offs..... we find ways round things because VW are too greedy.
dr_mat 0 Posted May 21, 2004 Was talking about the threaded hole that you use to release the tension on the belt. It's supposed to be an 8mm thread that holds the tensioner off so you can safely take the belt off the pulley. The bolt holding the tensioner onto the engine may well be 13mm, I'm not sure. Kevin Bacon 5 Posted May 21, 2004 Yep, the tensioner bolt is just a common or garden 8mm job with a 13mm head. I picked up a 5 inch long black bolt from B&Q and it works fine.
Nick_Micouris 0 Posted May 21, 2004 Sorry! I am being a complete nipple - yes - it has a 13mm head but is an 8mm thread!
