captainredeye 0 Posted April 12, 2012 Noticed on the advertising banner above apart from the blinding opportunity to date cougar's! halfrauds is selling gastrol magnatec for 17.50 where as I have got my hands on some from eurocarparts for 15 quid thought this was worth noting before any one let halfords get hold of there hard earned cash. KADVR6 0 Posted April 13, 2012 or go to costco and get it for £22 inc vat for two 4l, but you end up buying muffins and bloody tuna steaks and packs of 60 bog rolls, so in the end probably cheaper to buy from halfords with the trade card.

swiftkid 1 Posted April 13, 2012 Or you can not use magnatec, essentially fake tan and a bucketful of make-up for your engine and get synta which is only... a million times better for your engine for about £20 from main dealers or here
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted April 13, 2012 Never really seen the point of Magnatec clinging to conrods personally :D
VR6Joni 0 Posted April 13, 2012 If you check castrol's documentation it says not for VR6's, god knows why? Just thought I'd chuck that one in.
captainredeye 0 Posted April 13, 2012 (edited) So its not a good oil to be using on a vr? Just been on there web site typed in my reg for oil finder and magnatec was the one castrol recommend! VR6joni Where did you find this documentation? Edited April 13, 2012 by captainredeye
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted April 13, 2012 If you check castrol's documentation it says not for VR6's, god knows why? Just thought I'd chuck that one in. Really? How odd. Did they specify 24V or 12V? Castrol are an official supplier to VW, so they probably want you to but the more expensive 'officially sanctioned' stuff, i.e. Castrol Edge ;) So its not a good oil to be using on a vr? Can't see why not personally, but if Castrol themselves say it's not suitable for a VR6, probably best to avoid it.
carrots 1 Posted April 13, 2012 any good for a 1.8 16v kr that has noisey tappet sometimes
RW1 0 Posted April 13, 2012 any good for a 1.8 16v kr that has noisey tappet sometimes Used Magnatec, always quietened down my 8v tappets and VR6. ???? Magnatec 10w40 listed. Wouldn't use Edge though in an old engine. Just bought last August last of the stock of Castrol Magnetec 15w40, 3 cases of 4 x 4ltrs for £100. Think that works out at £8.33 per 4 ltr bottle. Now obsolete just like the Corrado. .
captainredeye 0 Posted April 13, 2012 See i know others who use it and never heard of a problem! Have been on motul 8100 for the past year but consumption is going up and need a thicker cheaper oil, so will be going with the castrol.

VR6joni Where did you find this documentation? It was on the twin pack (8L) box's. Says VR6, no reference to 12V or 24V

captainredeye 0 Posted April 21, 2012 This is a couple of pictures from the box, don't ask me why, just posting for users reference! Odd one that may be worth a call to castrol to clear it up. There must be some reason behind it but I'm no oil expert.
VR6Joni 0 Posted April 22, 2012 Yeah, I'd love to know why they put this on the box, I used to use Magnatec and it's done no harm that I can see and doubt it will. I just don't like seeing things like this with out an explanation. And to top it off, castrol recommend it for the VR6 on their website?????????? captainredeye 0 Posted April 24, 2012 Well i asked nicely and this is what i got. Hi Ben All I can think of is that those engines are also used in later vehicles where the Magnatec 10W-40 would not be suitable - so as a " catch all " to be safe as they can't have specific dates and models on the pack. The later engines would be on the VW 502 00 / 504 00 spec so would need either the EDGE 5W-30 or the EDGE 5W-40 as Magnatec would not be suitable for those I assume that your Corrado is an older model that would have originally asked for 501 00 or 501 01 ? The Magnatec will be fine for that - but if you wanted the best performance and protection then the EDGE would be better. The website should be safe as it's done on a model by model basis and I do the recommendations so I will put what I think is most appropriate for the vehicle, although there are only two slots I have, so that doesn't mean the recommendations are the only ones you can use Hope that helps ?
