better brake pads....

I've had some quite scary moments recently where my brakes have been almost non-existant, noramlly when i've been thrashing it a bit ;) so they're obviously getting hot and just fading totally. The pads got replaced at the 80k service, and have done about 8k since. I do give them a fair amount of stick, and as far as i know they're VW parts (fitted by the stealer). I think some uprated ones are in order, but the only ones i've heard anything about are the green-stuff fast road pads. Cant afford to uprate the brakes beyond a set of pads really, so what do people recomend? (advice on disc's is welcome so long as they're cheap!)

i have pagid fast road pads on my vr6. they squeek round town (which gets annoying) but they bite into the VW discs very well and i have had no fade.......yet

i can put up with squeaking so long as they stop me! when you're bombing along at 90 and some fool moves out into the fast lane in front of you and your brakes start to die its definatly brown trouser time! where did you get your pads from? i just looked at awesome GTI and they only have them listed for the golf....

chris mate treat your self and join alexs group buy and get the brembos!!!! cheesy who has them fitted on his motor he says they can stop on a five pence peice.... LOL proper stoping power and there 4 pot ..... the entire kit is £395 and thats everything just to bot on!!! join and be amased by hte pure stoping ability of brembos...

Also have Pagid FRs, very good material. Can't fault them for the price really. And mine don't squeak at all :lol:

if they're fading, then you've shagged your brake fluid as well as possibly overheated the pads...

 

The standard VW pads are actually pretty good, and if you're fading them to almost nothing, there's something else not quite right (or you're driving with your foot on the brake all the time!) :|

 

Replace the brake fluid with DOT5.1 and make sure you bleed all the old stuff out... then see if you still get brake fade... ;)

 

Dead cheap to do, and makes one hell of a difference... 8)

The Golf G60 has the same pads as the Corrado. I would recommend getting your brake fluid changed too. Especially if you have no idea when it was last done.

 

VW say it should be done bi-annually. Get some DOT 4 or higher. Make sure your rear wheels bearings are tight, as that can take a lot of feel out of the pedal..

 

I have used Green stuff pads in the past and they are good at track speeds, so the road should be no problem. I bought some last year at inters for about £30 inc delivery!!

 

Pagid fast road and their ordinary road compound are good too IMHO. I have used both kinds on track days without problems.

Changing the fluid sounds like a good idea, thinking about it, every time its happened has been on my way back from my parents house which has lots of long straight roads rudely interupted by roundabouts, so they'll be getting pretty hot. plan of attack then, change the fluid and get some pagid's, might as well do both to be sure! cheers chaps, insightful and helpful as always!

I have used the green stuff pads but found that they started to make the disks crack!

I also found that when they were cold they were a bit crap until you got them warmed up they were great.

I'll second Bean's comments. Cold Greenstuff pads can be scary

 

Pagid FR pads have lots of bite and are fade-free, but they do make quite a bit of dust.

 

On the topic of the original post, I think old fluid is more likely as the cause - you have to get standard pads REALLY hot before they fade to the degree described.

guys do you know how much brake fluid you need if i was to do a flush on the entire system? and where can i get this dot 5.1 stuff from.......mine is fading slightly, pads and discs are fine... cheers :-P

Dot 5.1 is available from most good car parts places, including Halfords... 8)

 

A litre bottle should flush the entire system with ease, and don't forget to bleed the clutch through too as it uses the same fluid and probably hasn't been done in the best part of 10 years! :roll: :lol:

The fella at inters told me that EBC had used several different compounds of Greenstufff pads over the last 5 years or so. The ones I bought last year were an improvement over the ones I bought in 1999. Less dust and much longer lasting.

 

Admittidly they do need a bit of heat in them but I never found it a problem on the road.

I have used grooved and drilled disks in the past and to be honest for the road I don't see the point. It could be I am getting older and wiser(tighter) but I just use good quality plain disks.

 

Spend the money you save on petrol, beer or perhaps a loom?

 

Possible Trimsport deal coming up for inters. Get some eye candy.

Nope - not unless you go to track days, etc

 

I have some drilled Brembos on the front of my G60 & there's absoloutely no difference whatsoever to the standard ones, although they do look much better - visible through the spokes of my wheels 8)

 

If you want better brakes then go for the Brembo or Willwood 4 pot calipers & larger diameter discs.

 

Incidentally - I will be running an offer in a few weeks time for the larger diameter Brembo discs & 4 pot calipers, etc. I'll be buying these direct from the factory & so should be quite competetive on price :wink:

I didn't go for the drilled and slotted disks in the end. I went to fit the back brakes only to find that the disk itself is the hub for the bearing to sit in so i thought i might aswell do those at the same time!! :roll:

 

It is a neverending snow ball of think to buy and do!!!
