I think ive used the wrong OIL opppps

Recommended Posts

hey since my last oil change i think i have used the wrong oil...

well car is a 2.0L 16v

i used CASROL GTX MAGNETECH 10/40 is this OK...

since i had no corrado user manual i'm not sure if tis was ok.... this is what the garage recomended but of course they are out there to damage your car so they get more business.... LOL

i've noticed some slight weird problems in the last couple of days

things like MAJOR LAG and VERY LUMPEY IDLES when its ideing like i floor it (out of gear) and te revs pick up like in a couple of secound ~3 then the needle starts moving...

what is the correct oil to use in my corrado...

------------

thanks

10w/40 should be fine.. I used the exact same stuff on my Corrado 2.0 16v when I had it and it ran fine...

I take it you changed the filter at the same time, and used a genuine VAG item when you did?

Should be fine, most of us use the Quantum (Castrol) Silver Syntha from the VW dealers which is also 10W/40.

The problem you have is unrelated, HT misfire or vacumn leak maybe?

i think magnatec has a poor reputation in the motor trade, although ive never used it myself

The only thing I heard was that it killed the OE oil coolers on the VR's but I don't know how someone can really prove that... I assume the Silver Syntha we use is just unbranded Castrol GTX without the 'magnatec'

ya I was wondering about my oil as well...

Mobil 1 super synthetic 15w-50

I live in the north east US, and summer is coming up....

That should be ok right?

I thought synta silver was semi synthetic oil and synta gold was fully synthetic.

where as ordinary castrol GTX is just ordinary Oil.

Me brov uses magnatec and values it,he uses it in his Omega Elite.

Castrol oils are used by many garages and it is bought in bulk, thats how you see the tanker floating around topping up the garages, owned by the Burma group

nothing to do with 'Be Undressed Ready My Angel...'

Ordinary castrol GTX might be a thicker viscosity too.

Has anyone played with the timing ?

Don't like Magnatec.Used it once and vowed never again.

I found it to be extremely thin when warm and oil pressure dropped under hard cornering.

I changed it to Comma's fully synthetic last time and it seems to be very good.So far. :?

Porsche stopped using Magnatec a few years ago as they found that their cars were suffering from low oil pressure when using it... Dunno what they use now though, but they don't get the same low oil pressure problems! ;)

I used to use Magnatec in my MKI 16V until once when the shop had run out, I tried a standard 10W40 semi and the engine ran soooooo much better I've stuck with either that or Synta Silver ever since... 8)

Erk... don't use generic oil filters.

Its probably not related, but I would get that filter off and pick up a VAG one. In fact I think the VAG one from the Stealers is actually cheaper than that anyway!!

This is the quote about oil filters from the CCGB website :

Corrados need genuine VW or Bosch oil filters, which have a special vales in the top to stop oil draining totally if the filter gets blocked or is faulty. If the car hasn't got one fitted then trouble could be brewing, however this does not apply to some aftermarket performance cone filters.

Just recently had a chat with a local BMW specialist, (but with 30 years VW main dealer experience), with regards to engine oils. This came about from a major mayonaise problem on my 8v Gti, and he said that Castrol and Comma oils are pretty poor at combating it, due to lack of/wrong type of additives/detergents in the oil. His personal opinion was that Duckhams and Shell are good if your car suffers from this. He remained strangely non comital on the Quantum oils though??

I used to work as a mechanic up until a few years ago and I never liked castrol oils at all. They don't seem to have as high a level of detergent in them as many other brands. The internals of an engine with castrol oil in it were usually filthy. However, that was with normal GTX I don't know if things have improved with their newer range of synthetic oils. I have used several oil types in my cars which I have found to be good, shell, duckhams, elf, valvoline, mobil 1 (not their 0W/40 stuff)

re the oil filter, bosch aren't the only filter company to supply VW with oe filters. There are at least two more so if the filter you get is made by one of these companies then you are ok. -1. Knecht Mahle, the same company that make engine parts like pistons, and 2. Mann & Hummel. And there could be a third (Hengst) but I'm not sure if they are oe or not.

The wife went into the dealers and asked for a 5 litre tub of Silver synta

well anyway the parts man said they were giving away free oil filters to go with the oil so £17 for 5 litres of silver synta and a freebee vw filter and yes she does have cleavage

that was at Hawcos in Inverness

The black screw on filters (most Golfs/G60) are made by MHO and the cartridge type ones (VR6) are Hengst.

The ones from GSF seem to be Mann etc...

I'd say once your filter is made by any of those 4 companies (bosch, hengst, mann, mahle) then you're fine.

i change my oil every 300k and always use silver synta and filter from the dealers and im happy to say ive never ever had any sorts of problems. stick with what you know mate. the stuff in the castrol that makes it magnatec clings to your pistons and valves like honey would. not natural!

Yeah, once I get this service done, gonna do regular oil & filter changes using the VW stuff.

Takes all of 30 minutes, and costs a pittance all for a bit of peace of mind, and extended engine life :)
