Dealer or no dealer?

'96 VR is due its 50k service, has full stamped history till '99 (consistent with mileage)

 

Is it worth paying the extra squids just for the sake of the dealer stamp??

Personally if there is a good specialist local to you who you trust in having a good knowledge of the corrado it doesn't matter mate. Receipt's are king for older car's why not purchase required part's yourself and supply.

What would you be happy with ?. I suppose with the cars low mileage and successive dealer service stamp it would be nice to keep it up . Its not like you wont get a proper job done by a reliable mechanic so no problems there . Most of the cars on here are serviced by their owners or ,as said a reliable mechanic who knows the car and looks after it , they both do the same as a VW mechanic so theres no difference really . As said though later on if you wanted to sell it ,it may go along way with some buyers .

Mines only done 40k, I've only got 5 stamps in the book. Refuse to pay dealer servicing cost and do most things my self unless its major. Then it will go to a vw specialist.

 

Don,t really see the benefit now of main dealer servicing on a car this old. It's out of warrantee. Keep your receipts and try and use vw parts or good quality parts. I have 2 arch lever folders full and have my own service record book / diary where I write down every thing I do from oil changes / parts bought for car / obsovations / wash polish etc.

 

What's the dealers hourly rate these days £80/hour ?

Mines done 67k with loads of stamps in the service book and all from the main dealer, for this reason mine only goes to VW for MOT and service.

I'm at the point where I don't want to spoil it.

I would go to the main dealer & have an oil service to get the stamp & then get a specialist to do the other bits

Despite the fact that it would be nice to have concurrent stamps in a book that, and dealer servicing would be a new experience for me. Service manager quoting 250 for oil filter + change, airfilter, plugs oh and 'a good once over'. Told him he'd get that from me if I allowed him to touch my VR and he wasn't nice to it. I'll have a chat with the mechanics first to see if the know what they're looking at but paying over the odds doesn't sit well with me so I'll probably do what I've always done and look after it. Must get a Bentley manual!

I'd still go to a specialist, rather than a VW dealer. If in the future you come to sell the car, surely any prospective buyer would understand that a specialist stamp from someone who actually knows these cars would mean more than a stamp from some random VW dealership.

This. I do my own servicing now but with such a low mileage car it's worth getting the dealer stamp. However I wouldn't trust a VAG main dealer with any more significant Corrado work because they simply know so little about them. You're better of finding a recommended independant or specialist who has some recent experience of them.
