Ignition switch screw !!!!!

What kind of screw head is it , if got two small pozi heads in there but can't turn it , I don't want to knacker the head up . I've had a torch up there to have a look but my eyes are straining to see it !

It is a pozi head screw but i found using a flat head better for gripping the screw. I assume your using small watchmaker type screw drivers as they work best with the room you have

Looks like someone has had a go before , I've held a mirror up to the head and it's not the best to be honest . To make matters worse I plugged the new switch in to try it and it still won't start .

Yes I did , it's just turning over and backfiring . I'm so close to breaking the car now !cant believe out of a possible 15 screwdrivers not one of them will undo the screw , it must be so tight .

Smash it off Rob. Thats what I had to do in the end. It'll have no stress keeping it tight then so should come out easily.

Bit worried about breaking something if I wack it Sean . By fitting the new one in at least I've eliminated the switch .

Hello Rob,

 

I replaced my ignition switch around 6 years ago now.

 

What I used was a small 1/4"(6mm) combination spanner,

and super glued a small Philips screw driver end bit,

in to the ring spanner end.

 

LIKE THIS

For me it worked a treat as I was able to get to the small retaining screw,

from the top whilst sat in the drivers seat,

it took me around 3 mins to get the screw out,

as your only able to turn the screw small movements at a time,

and about the same time for it to be screwed back in.

 

The steering column was adjusted to it's lowest level,

and both the top / bottom steering column cowlings were removed.

I've a bent mid sized flat head watch makers screwdriver specially for the job :) works fine every time, screw is not normally very tight as it's short and the head is sat on the plastic of the switch

I also used a watch makers/precision screw driver - the difficult part was holding the driver in place and twisting it - I used one of those drivers with the free moving top of the screw driver so I could push and twist at the same time and used needle nose pliers to turn whilst I held in place with the other hand. Wasn't very tight at all and was really surprised as all the information on here suggested I would in for a difficult job

 

Someone the other day told me that trapping a rubber band between the screw and the screw driver head works for extra grip when the head has been buggered!

Thanks for the replys , really appreciate it .i tried the pliers on the watch makers screw driver , also took of under tray and cowl . I think someone's had a go before because the head is not the best . I tried many drivers but none seemed to fit .

Rob, as I said in the other thread, and as Sean has mentioned here, break it off! Get a flat bladed screwdriver and hammer and give it a few whacks. Look at your new switch and you'll see the tiny plastic bracket you need to break off the existing one.

Great idea that . I found it easy to get the driver on the screw , it's undoing it that's hard

Yeah that's it Rob,

it will unscrew it just takes a few minutes,

as you can only turn it in small movements.
