mk1 GTI for sale - takes me back - what do you wish you'd not let go?

Me too David,

 

I still have the V5 and the tartan check interior from my 1980 series 1 GTi. Basically sold the dashboard, steering wheel and some other bits and bobs and ended up with a useable Corrado with the funds!

 

Think when im old(er) I will probably regret letting it go to the point that it couldnt be restored, but hey ho. My dad still goes on about his Mk1 1275 Cooper S mini, they're worth about 25k now!

 

Good subject for a new thread this; Whats the most expensive car you let go and wish you still had?

I had a Ford Capri for a few years that i bought for £800 that was immaculate, i sold it for £800 but if i still had it now it would probably be worth 4k, you used to be able to pick them up for peanuts but the prices are ridiculous now. A mate at the time had a mk2 escort that he practically gave away because the welding needed was daunting but even in that state now he could probably name his price.

my PUG! 205 1.9 turbo dimma plated! it was far to much hassle let alone they money involved! Wait this sounds familiar.... yes that's right I own a corrado now!

Nostalgic cooing of these old cars aside, they weren't brilliant were they, let's be honest!

 

I had a Mars red Y plate exactly like that and my only memories of it are: Rubbish headlights, rubbish brakes (REALLY rubbish), rubbish wipers, rubbish heater, rust, clutch cable pulling through the bulkhead, tappety DX engine, rust, rust and more rust. Handling wasn't great either, with 205 rivaling snap over-steer on the over-run. There was nothing great about it. A grunty engine in a light shell with a wheel in each corner is pleasing in the same way lots of salt and sugar are to a hung over person. Hardly ground breaking stuff.

 

It was a good car compared to what else was around at the time, I'll give it that, but it was the MK2 that actually set the standard to my mind and is when my FOND memories of VWs started.

The only car from the 80's era that I had that I think truely was/is awesome, was my E30 325i with BMW MS LSD.....that car did everything well, fun (check), fast (check), cool (check), practical (check), reliable (check)

 

If modern BMWs were like the old ones, I would never buy any other brand.....shame they lost their direction once we got to the end of the 90's

I fondly remember my first VW Corrado 1.8 16v bought in 1995. I'd saved up for over a year and moving up from a Fiesta 1.1L I felt like I'd hit the big time, especially as I was only 24.

My 1.8 Golf Driver on a J plate with 37000 miles back in 1998. First VW at 18 years old. Fuse box went and I sold it on for buttons.

 

Was super clean being only 6 years old and would have been an ideal daily nowadays.

 

Also my mk2 Tornado Red 8V. 2nd keeper with 83000 on it in 2002 and I kept it until 2010 with only 106000. Although I had put it off the road for 3 years and it started to rot. Would have been another good one for the collection. Sold it for buttons again.

A few years back I had a 1972 Type III Fastback - I was the third owner and the second person had owned for about 15 years and for the last five years or so had only driven it to the MOT station and his local main dealer for a yearly service and back. I think it was about 40k it had on the clock and had a full VW service history. The rubber floor mats were mint, the seats felt like they had never been sat on, the heater worked and it drove and even smelt new. When I picked it up it even still had the "Welcome to your new Volkswagen" card hanging from the rear view mirror.

 

Also had a mint, never welded, 70k mile Ford Consul Capri 1500 GT and about 10 years ago bought a 63 Beetle off the original owner - an old German ex POW who had settled here after the war.

 

My first car was a Renault 5 Gordini Turbo which I should have kept hold of - there's virtually none left now :(

 

Actually thinking about it I still wish I had most of my old cars - Audi Quattro, Beetle Karmann Convertible, 1932 Ford Roadster with a flathead V8, 1954 Chevy, 1972 Mini 1275 GT... :lol:

mk3 1.6 Astra.............no

 

Saab 9-3ss 2.0t...........no

 

Pug 307 1.6 Rapier........no

 

Mk5 Golf GTD..............nice but classic....no.

 

Mk2 Focus.................no

 

Mk3 Golf GTI (first toy)........no

 

4 or 5 Corsa B's and C's as stop gaps in between others.........no!

 

Why am I making my choice of cars public knowledge! I should be stoned to death with that lot!

 

Please go easy with the abuse, I have seen the light now I promise!!!!!:puppydogeyes:
