tman2714 0 Posted January 20, 2015 Hi all, Was having my windscreen replaced the other day and discovered rust underneath it. I've had a couple of the holes welded up but am going to attack the rest of the rust with a dremel and bilt hammer as recommend on a thread here. tman2714 0 Posted February 27, 2015 Hi all, Finished the windscreen rust off in January but it's taken me a while to update the thread. 1. AA took the windscreen out and discovered rust (shock). Decided to get the holes welded up and treat the rust myself. Can't afford £500+ right now 2. A restoration place took care of the rust holes for me for about £60 3. Ground the rust back to the bare metal with a dremel 4. Treated rust with Bilt Hammer (cleaning first. Left on for 18 hours in a cold garage. Not idea conditions as it needs time and warmth for deep rust but results were ok and I was needed to get the C back on the road 5. Scrapped off the Bilt Hammer 6. Cleaned and treated with the Bilt Hammer zinc primer 7. Sprayed with Halfords white primer, then Alpine white and clear coat. 8. AA put new windscreen in (took 2 screens and 3 blokes) Some pictures below (need to update with paint and the screen in). For the money I spent (around £100) and a weekends work, I'm happy. It's my first time doing this sort of thing so I've learnt quite a bit and when the weather is better I'm going to have a go a the other areas of rust on the car. I'm never going to get the colour matched well enough so I'm thinking I'll treat and smooth the rust and probably get it plasdipped later in the year (or maybe Raail Liquid Vinyl https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7cjqP5Owxs ). Once I've got the cash I'll do a proper paint job in a few years. Wayne2015 10 Posted February 27, 2015 Nice one :) I got a bit of rust around my windscreen and was thinking what to do too. Yes - the rust treatment usually need double digit temp to cured. I know coz when I did my other car, its still sticky (Dinitrol) after a month now :( Do u mind saying how much AA charge u (but I guess its a insurance claim)? I was thinking if not too much rust on mine, a private windscreen company will sort the rust out for me too ;) What white pain your car? Is it not easier to match than metallic or red? Gti_Jamo 10 Posted February 27, 2015 Aye you got off quite lightly there. Mine was rotten the point of considering breaking it but just put the hours in and got it done. If it wasn't an insurance job i'd of fitted the windscreen myself too as it was a poor effort by them. They've never quite got their heads round corrados. Jim Bowen 1 Posted February 27, 2015 Doing a little bit on mine at the moment, was a tiny hole when windscreen was fitted not long ago and the repair was a bit of a bodge, so trying to fix it now without removing the screen, its a nightmare trying to the old sealant off. tman2714 0 Posted March 1, 2015 Hey, AA was £70 insurance claim. To get the new one in they had to come back with the area technical manager... Mines alpine white. Got a can from Halfrauds. Doesn't match that well but I think that's because the paint on there is 20 years old. Used a Dremel to get the sealant off. Thought about buying one for ages. Wish I'd done it sooner. Nice black beast u got there! Hmmm...I was looking at replacing my windscreen and replacing the original plastic trims with generic rubber ones....now u scaring me - glup! I have few rust around the windscreen and warped trims with gaps... No update on your thread for a while? OK, sorry will give thread back to OP....
