seanl82 23 Posted February 20, 2015 Don't get hung up with "uprated" spark plugs. Single element plugs are more than sufficient, and apparently run better anyway so stick with those. HT leads, OEMparts.co.uk I think sell them at a decent price, but don't quote me on that. The cheap ones from Eurocarparts etc are best left alone apparently. Dubpower leads have a good reputation and are very well priced (dubpower.co.uk). Also don't forget to change the drive belt. Can be had from carparts4less or eurocarparts for about £12, and is the one with part number 7PK1290 for power steering but non A/C VR6s.
seanl82 23 Posted February 20, 2015 I've been running the red pas fluid since the rebuild without a snag. Got me worried now! I can't comment from personal experience Sean, but I've read it on quite a few threads on here. I got the green PAS fluid from AVS spares as I too was a bit worried after reading so many horror stories.

Wayne2015 10 Posted February 22, 2015 (edited) Interesting read here : http://www.hemmings.com/hsx/stories/2013/09/01/hmn_buyers_guide1.html Remember when my car couldnt shift into any gear? Is this the cause? Edited February 22, 2015 by Wayne2015
Wayne2015 10 Posted February 23, 2015 Just a quick update... Specialist garage said: 1. Water pump seems new 2. Will do clutch/brake fluid as well (since replacing the Clutch Slave Cylinder) - Brake fluid is the clutch fluid??? 3. Disc s / pads low - 1000 miles left (standard sizes) Think bill is still going up ...eeek! :(
Tigerfish 10 Posted February 23, 2015 Yes, Clutch fluid is fed from the brake fluid reservoir.

Chuggs1 10 Posted February 23, 2015 Just doing the standard. Have the callipers seizing on the back so when I reverse I get a horrible groaning (onloy happens when someone is walkiong by haha) So Rear - Mk4 callipers and braided goodridge hoses - while im doing it im adding some new Brembo discs and pads - the pads are chamfered not squared like the originals - another cause of the groaning Front - Mk3 callipers, 288mm Brembo discs and pads and braided goodridge hoses. These are the biggest discs that will fit behind the standard wheels and apparently give much better braking. - so thought I would get done while doing the back. Ok Big, braided, Brembo - i heard are all good things to a car Hmmm I will enquire too how much are 288mm discs are over standard ones. Will pads have to be bigger then? Would my existing calipers ok for then? Why not 288 on rears too? As my wheels are aftermarket, I may ask my garage whats the biggest they can fit behind them .. Chuggs1 10 Posted February 23, 2015 bigger discs on front need bigger callipers and hence bigger pads - you would not get benefit of bigger discs if pad size wasn't bigger too. Not sure if you can go bigger on rear - not seen anyone mention it - so just sticking withwhat I have seen ion here as the recommended. If you have bigger front wheels then yes you can probably go bigger - seen a few people talk about 312mm fronts but don't know any detail - think I have seen some talk about S3 brakes? Chuggs1 10 Posted February 23, 2015 The callipers are second hand one from Golf Mk3 - I think the VR6 .... got them from purpletom on here and think he has more including carriers - I am having my garage give them a refurb and paint too
Chuggs1 10 Posted February 23, 2015 Actually - looking at your aftermarket wheels - are you sure you have the original brakes and not upgraded already - just seeing he large red callipers they look bigger that standard - but I could be wrong! Measure your discs
Chuggs1 10 Posted February 23, 2015 Obh and sorry did not answer the MK3 callipers including carriers from Purpletom were 60 inc delivery - they need a good wire brush and paint but otherwise all work well.

Thats not bad. So all u need for 288/pad is just new calipers/carriers?
Chuggs1 10 Posted February 23, 2015 And hoses with banjos - im using the goodridge ones - think there are possibly cheaper options? So front MK3 Callipers £60 inc the carriers Carriers Hoses (with banjo)£70 288 discs £70 Pads - £35 Plus refurbing the callipers and fitting - think that's around £150 inc vat
Sean_Jaymo 0 Posted February 23, 2015 (edited) If you're replacing the front lines with braided, you are best of replacing the remaining 4 flexi lines. When you replace rubber with braided, the pressure that would normally cause the rubber to swell slightly will be transmitted to the other soft rubber lines. If the lines are a bit old, you will be causing extra undue strain on them and shortening their lives quickly. The calipers are available from a lot of the faster mk4 base golfs/audis/seats/skodas etc and are cheap as chips. You can use mk4 calipers and carriers. The only part that you must use that is mk3 is the discs themselves. They must also be the late discs otherwise you will be fitting 280 back on! Don't use mk4 288 discs, they are a different offset and don't bolt straight on. Edited February 23, 2015 by Sean_Jaymo
Sean_Jaymo 0 Posted February 23, 2015 Oh and 312 discs are the same as S3 brakes and TT brakes. Got to love vw parts bins!
Hairyarse 10 Posted February 23, 2015 If you've got 1000 miles left in the brakes, why replace them? (unless your brakes are really bad?)

Hi Sean So if im doing the Mk3 front upgrade and Mk4 rear upgrade with goodridge braided hoses on both - do you happen to know the part numbers for the additional flexi hoses and the best place to order them from?
