just been and bought a passat vr6 with air con,any ideas if the air con bit will fit on my corrado vr?

I would say that it will swap over. As to how complex it is remains to be seen!

 

Might just be easier to talk to a few companies about having installed from scratch rather than trying to plumb in a different car's air con system.

From what I've heard it's about a grand to get it installed from scratch

 

But I think a lot of that cost is labour, because you gotta do a lot of plumbing and buggery behind the dash to get it in... good luck tho mate, let us know how you get on

I know someone who used to work at VW when the corrado was new, and he said the cars had to be really taken apart when aircon was fitted new (dealer option, as they didnt come with AC from the factory in the UK).

 

Apparently when the AC was fitted from new it was a windcreen & dash out job.. sounds like hell to me. Maybe there are companies who can do it without butchering the car, but im guessing they've probably never touched a corrado. So you run the risk of them bodging your car :|

anyone have any pics of the heater control with air con,the passat is a 92 car and has 2 buttons (in the style of the later corrado switches)that say norm & max?

check which gas the passat uses to, if it uses the old stuff (cant remember the code) you'll most lightly have to covert it to r134a which can be costly in its self, new compressor, filters etc. The old gas is getting very difficult to get hold of and has been outlawed due to enviromental reasons.

 

As far as fitting it in the corrado, yes the passat dash does look similar but I wouldnt mind guessing that all the airbox and ducts is different on the corrado, would also bet on the piping not being a straight drop in afair.

Neither needed to be removed. Only the lower dash is removed to fit in all the air con plumbing.

You're going to have to transfer the PAS/Air con pump brackets from the Passat and use the relevant serpentine belt. Then the pipework and front rad need installing plus the interior parts and control panel. And then it would be wise to get the refrigerant fluid replaced and recharged.

 

Pretty sure there will be a condensor outlet to plumb in too.

The best thing to to do is to compare the heater parts from one car to the other using Etka. If the heater matrix and housing for the fan assembley are the same them this is going to be a relatively easy, just very very time consuming. You just need to remember how to put it back together again.

 

In relation to the under bonnet work Kev is right you need a new belt, the serpentine belt supplied with the Passat should be the right one, check to see if it is usable (mine is cracked and going in the bin). The bracket is probably the same, irrespective of AC. I want to do this on my next project, just got to finish the Storm and flog it. I was thinking for that factory look get to get an AC specialist to modify the Passat hoses. Should be cheap as chips. :)

Depends on which version of the aircon it is... I know that one of them has a completely different central air routing box which is behind the middle of the dash (where the matrix is) and there's NO way you can get that in/out without taking out the dash... :?

 

I looked into this briefly when I got my leather interior, and then thought, Sod it, I'll just buy a window blind for when I park it up! ;) :lol:

I'm basing my comments on the factory approved Diavia kit that was the most common dealer fit set up.

Given that you have the "norm/max" buttons in VW/C style it's probably a Diavia. You might have a sticker in the engine bay from the manufacturer? Other than that look for markings on the air con components.

On a Passat VR6 I think aircon was std, very likely to be the factory setup.

Guy H has done the conversion in his storm iirc, climatronic!!!

It was me who did the Climatronic conversion in Guys storm and have done it in my C too, originally with Climatronic in the Corrado dash, now linked into the TT Dash.

Give me a couple of months and I may have a "conversion" kit to allow full climatronic to be fitted to any late dash Corrado as part of our range of Corrado products...watch this space. 8) :shock:
