Ok guys - bear in mind I know VERY little about fitting things, what should this bill have been..?

 

- Supply and fit GMAX suspension kit (kit cost about £240)

- Supply and fit top suspension strut mounts (inc. bearings) front (both sides)

- Supply and fit rear upper and lower shock mounts (both sides)

- Supply and fit 6 NGK spark plugs

- Supply and fit new front disks and pads

- Full service

 

All of the above work was carried out in VW Specialists.

 

 

...oh yes..they advised on changing both complete front wishbones as the bushes were shot in them (not worth just changing the bushes) - is this correct ?

Susp kit fitting plus alignment etc.. should come to around 3 hours labour, strut mounts would be included in that as would the shock mounts. So say, to be comfortable about 4 hours tops. Spark plugs would take about 10 minutes, plus the cost - don't know what the going rate is - say 40-50 quid max!

As a guide, front discs are 29.50 each from GSFCarparts and a set of pagid fast road pads are 29.50 also. Probably about1/2 one or two hours labour for fittings on those.

 

Difficult to say on the service. I got a full check up on mine, including plugs fluids etc... for 120 all in - but that was mate's rates.

Whatever it was, I seriously doubt it was worse than what AmD charged me for new OEM suspension and disks/pads/bearings... They also did my front wishbones too... but a bolt sheared so the labour cost on that wasn't pretty! :lol:

Why do people insist on paying for other peoples incompetence, unless they warn you up front that there may be problems then theres no reason for you to pay for them shearing any bolts or any other f*ck up that they cause, get a price for the job and thats it however long it takes.

Ok, my estimate (Reading specialist rates):

suspension strip + refit 5 hours

front disks/pads 2 hours

full service including plugs 3 hours plus parts

 

so maybe 10 hours plus parts = about £450 + parts?

 

parts would be maybe 240 for the suspension kit, plus 50 for all the top mounts, plus £40 for platinum plugs, 25 for oil+filter, erm.. front disks 80 plus pads another 20 total comes to... 450 + 455 = £905 ?

 

You could argue that I've overestimated the times for these jobs, but then these are figures I've heard quoted elsewhere...

 

For genuine VW prices add 100% to the labour!!

Well if its anything like Dr Mat you should have only paid half that becasue none of those jobs is hard at all and you can do yourself. Only thing would be the alignment.

The biggest factor is the labour rate - if they charge £60/hr + VAT then the above estimate is way out, but if they charge only £25 + VAT (I'm sure such places DO exist, somewhere?!!) then it's equally ridiculous..

I had the following done to my original VR6

 

4 Bilstein Gas shocks, 2 x rear discs + wheel bearings and a fluid change. New top mounts, top mount bearings and bump stops. Cost about £275. and I watched the guy do it all in less than 3 hours.

 

So with the £430 you shelled out on parts thats £560 I'd say. The suspension and brakes with air tools should not take longer than 2-3 hours. The rears for an experienced mechanic working with ramps and air tools could be done in 30 minutes. The ancillary suspension parts are are a piece of pi$$ with the suspension out so doesnt really add much time.

 

I cant understand 10 hours, unless something major goes wrong. How much did you pay?
