SJM 10 Posted November 25, 2016 Hi people, I’m Stephen, a new member and thought I’d introduce myself. Bizarrely I’m not a current owner of a VR6 but I’m in the market for one and thought this would be the best place to be. I’m no stranger to modern classic ownership as my current project nears completion. Some may be disappointed however that it wasn’t a VW. I’m not looking a major project, what I have in mind is buying something that is mostly already solid. The intention is to build the car to last and preserve it for years to come. I will be looking to retain the car is its standard form. Any advice will be greatly appreciated and will be used to guide me through my project. I have already looked at the buying guide which was most helpful. If anyone can give me advice on the following to enable me to gauge the costs involved; • Engine, would you recommend pulling the engine and gearbox out for rebuild/service? If so, where is the best place to go and what can you expect to pay? • Suspension, would you recommend replacing the system with new and are the parts easily obtainable and how much would one expect to pay? • Are there any upholstery specialists and what would you expect to pay? Of course, if any member is considering selling their car, I’d be interested. Many thanks.

SJM 10 Posted November 26, 2016 Hi Chris, I think you read it wrong there mate, a major project is not what I'm after. I was looking for something solid and rust free. The less work to do the better, but as I say, I'd be prepared to put some graft in if I get the right car. What have you to offer?
seanl82 23 Posted November 26, 2016 Hi Stephen, welcome to the forum! First of all, put us out of our misery, what is your current project then!? Its good that you've done your homework, as I'm sure you're aware, you'll need to be prepared to travel for the right car. In answer to your questions: 1. Worth seeing what the history is like obviously with any major work done to the engine. Unless its very high mileage, so long as the chains have been done then maybe worth checking compression, and leave it well alone for a while. There are some true experts in these cars around but depends where you are. Stealth Racing in the Midlands, or JMR on the South Coast. Give them a ring for rough prices as obviously again, depends how much work is required. 2. Standard suspension is now obsolete from VW, so you'd have to go aftermarket. There are plenty of struts around in standard form, but there were quite a variation throughout the years in spring and plate setup, so be careful what you get. Do your research and you should be ok, but the vast majority get well known lowering kits just to drop the car a small amount. It'll be your car though, and I'm sure extra kudos will go to you for trying to keep it standard. 3. There are a few excellent upholsterers around, I've only ever heard great things about MJ interiors who are up in Yorkshire, but again, worth doing a bit more research and getting recommendations dependant on where you are located. Good luck with your search, I hope you find what you're looking for! :thumbleft:

SJM 10 Posted November 26, 2016 Sean, I've a Mk4 S2 Escort RS Turbo. Just have to find somewhere to store it now and make room for the VR6. Many thanks for your reply, very helpful mate. There is a red one listed on Autotrader, if anyone has knowledge of its history?

There is a red one listed on Autotrader, if anyone has knowledge of its history? Great car the mk4 RS, although sadly command mental prices and way out of the budget for most now. We're not VW snobs here and can appreciate a good car regardless of who made it, don't worry! The red one at £9k? Don't know the car, but thats very strong money. Don't be put off by mileage by the way. Many enthusiast owned cars with a bit higher mileage will be just as good and reliable as a very low mileage cars which simply haven't been used. GlosterOx 0 Posted November 29, 2016 Hi Stephen, I know of a Green VR6 that has/will be coming up for sale in Newport South Wales, around 125000 miles on it. Needs a couple of things doing to it plus a general tidy up but the seller is only looking for £1700 for it - If interested PM me and I will pass you on his details. Ian.
