tonedef 9 Posted June 29, 2018 (edited) Could somebody please confirm the connections on the VR6 power steering rack for me. While my car was in pieces the rack was off for ages, I have a nasty suspicion that I somehow managed to get the pipes crossed when it went back together.........explaining why the steering didn't feel particularly power assisted and was lumpy turning. It got worse when I removed the rack and one of the pipes (the long and expensive one) got all twisted and broke but I'm not bitter! The money is spent and the new bits are here but I need to be 100% sure which pipe connects to which tapping on the rack, I believe it as the markings on the photo below of a spare rack I have. Note, mine was connected in the opposite way to the markings on the photo. Edited June 29, 2018 by tonedef
tonedef 9 Posted June 30, 2018 Nobody? Must be someone has done a steering rack or can trace the pipe run from rack to pump just to confirm!
ChrisL 20 Posted June 30, 2018 I’ve got loads of photos from my strip down of the vr6 but they are on my laptop at work. I can check on Monday .
tonedef 9 Posted June 30, 2018 Cheers Chris, I’m offshore Monday so I’ll not be putting it back together until the week after now but then it’ll be all panic as I need the car for my daughter’s wedding a few days after that!
Tjninny 10 Posted June 30, 2018 Nobody? Must be someone has done a steering rack or can trace the pipe run from rack to pump just to confirm! Looking at the diagram in the Bentley manual, your assumption re your photo looks to be right - the larger of the two “stubs” for the pipes to fasten to is for the return pipe. Thanks, it was my looking at Bentley and ETKA made me think mine were the wrong way around, expensive mistake, £240 for rack refurbish plus €329 for the broken pipe from Classic Parts. Explains why I’m trying to make sure this time! I’d just like to see either photos or some say they’ve traced the pipes before I tighten them up and start the engine.
