Jim Bowen 1 Posted July 4, 2018 Seeing as i have a new engine on the way (again), I'd like to look at doing something with gearbox, the two i have are both high mileage and i got them muddled up so not sure which is which now. Find a low mileage one or get one of mine rebuilt? How much is that likely to cost? I know stealth racing do it, but can't be arsed with the trip up there, am sure most gearbox specialists can manage. Is it worth doing any sort of upgrade/mod while I'm there? Jim Bowen 1 Posted July 4, 2018 Also, is there a difference between corrado and golf boxes? As i may have a corrado one and a golf one.
Dox 23 Posted July 4, 2018 Also, is there a difference between corrado and golf boxes? As i may have a corrado one and a golf one. They should be the same? The USA 2.8s get the same box with a 16V or G60 3.65? diff, that is said to bring our 2.9s alive and a great mod. HotGolf on CGTi now trades as Gas and Gears and has a good reputation for gearbox mods and builds. https://www.facebook.com/gasngears/
Jim Bowen 1 Posted July 5, 2018 Cheers, looks like he knows what he is doing, will get in touch, see if i can post him a gearbox
swiftkid 1 Posted July 5, 2018 This is something I've been looking into as I'd like to upgrade in the near future. Couple of options for an upgrade depending on what you want to achieve -there's the V5 box which is something like a 3.9 final drive but 6 speed, you end up with a similar cruising speed at 70, if not a touch higher but have to go through the gears quicker -the G60 final drive (which I believe is same as ABF), which is 3.6 so improves acceleration but cruising RPM is near 4k, the twist on this which is what I'm considering is a TDI 5th which should bring it back down to nearer 3k at 70mph. There was a guy on facebook selling a freshly rebuilt VR6 box with G60 final drive, 3rd & 4th which seemed interesting! -6 speed gemini box/quaife, rare unlike the billions of BBS wheels people claim are rare and very pricey!!! Could consider a lightened flywheel, it's supposed to help the engine rev a bit better but with a slight loss in torque from what I read. I haven't done it but others have. GlosterOx 0 Posted July 5, 2018 There is (or was?) a thread in the wiki about fitting a TDI 5th gear. I was always advised that the ideal combination was a 3.68 diff from the 16V/G60 along with a G60 3rd gear and TDI 5th gear with a slightly lightened steel flywheel. Geeba 0 Posted July 5, 2018 Yeah have heard that the 3.68 diff makes cruising pretty uncomfortable... I've kept mine stock for that reason... I'm getting old! I did ask about lightened flywheels at Stealth and Vince said there was a good reason VW stuck that great lump of iron on the end and was best to leave it. Often wondered why no one has stuck a MK4 6 speed box in? - like the 180HP 20v item? - I know it goes in a MK2 G60 as I've seen it in.
Dox 23 Posted July 5, 2018 V5 boxes are 5 speed, both 10v and 20v
Geeba 0 Posted July 5, 2018 V5 boxes are 5 speed, both 10v and 20v 20v Turbo - AUQ 180Bhp engine for example fitted to the Anniversary MK4 GTI
Geeba 0 Posted July 5, 2018 (edited) To fit it in a non 6 speed MK4 all you need is the Driveshafts, clutch/flywheel and the shifter linkage and you're good to go... a nut and bolt exercise.. Its an O2m box from memory https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Leon-Cupra-R-Gearbox-02M-6-Speed-2004/202355700392?hash=item2f1d56f2a8:g:m0MAAOSw4gxbLjM8 Edited July 5, 2018 by Geeba link added
sexybourbon 0 Posted July 5, 2018 The 3.68 final drive gives me a cruising speed of around 3200 rpm , great mod though its certainly alive You can fit the tdi 5th wich will bring you under 3000rpm again and as for a lightend flywheel iv not had no problems in the last four years of running mine
dragon green 4 Posted July 5, 2018 When my gearbox "threw" a bearing,I had mine rebuilt into a different shell, anything worn was replaced,my local mechanic new a "bloke" in a shed, and it cost me under £300, You could always use a diesel box and graft the gears into one of your shells, giving you a top speed between 176-192mph ! Which will give you very low revs at 70mph, I've got a wavetrac fitted in mine, and I highly recommend fitting a LSD

tomi 10 Posted July 6, 2018 I will install soon a 2,3 v5 EBS coded gearbox with 5th from TDI ASD coded gearbox. EBS is a 3,944 final drive , and the 0.717 5th from ASD, will make it the same for cruising speed, then the stock vr CHN. Should be more fan to drive on all four short gears , and the same for cruising as a stock vr on 5th.
