dtjames 0 Posted July 28, 2004 I am due to head off on a long journey. I have been driving around the neighbourhood today doing bits and bobs, and I flicked to my oil temp as I was heading home. What should this read please. VR6 76,000 miles. No oil cooler fitted. Please respond ASAP - TIA.

dtjames 0 Posted July 29, 2004 My oil temp. went up to 122deg. at one point on the journey... ...mind you, I was trying to make up for lost time and was doing at least 85-100 most of the way ( I think  ) When I slowed down, the temp did lower to 114. Can you knowledgeable ppl confirm that this is ok please?
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted July 29, 2004 Mine used to read 114 degrees just sitting there cruising at 80 which isn't very healthy. I fitted a Mocal and it then dropped to 96-98 at the same speed. The only time it ever gets into the 100s is when really caning it on the motorway at speeds over 100mph, and even then 104-106 is as high as it gets. 122 is too high imo. ben16v 0 Posted July 29, 2004 have been keeping an eye on temps a bit more than usual since head was done in december, think im gonna stick an oil cooler on her. I dont wanna steal ur thread but:  one other thing i dunno if anyone else has noticed this..... when car is upto temp if i: put dip lights on the temp goes up 2-4 deg main beam goes up another 2-4 fogs on up 2-4 rear screen on up 2-4 turn them off and it drops back down instantly :? i`ve tried this on the move and stationary, it happens either time! any ideas :?: :!:
Henny 0 Posted July 29, 2004 benji16v, you're putting more load onto the alternator by turning on the heavy loads like lights and rear screen, so more heat will be produced by the engine as it has to work harder to power it all... 8) IMHO, ALL performance VWs should have a seperate oil cooler fitted... 8)
ben16v 0 Posted July 29, 2004 cheers man  oil cooler it is then eh!
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted July 29, 2004 IMHO, ALL performance VWs should have a seperate oil cooler fitted... 8) Absolutely. Especially as there are rumours of a heat wave this weekend 8)

dtjames 0 Posted July 30, 2004 On the journey home, I took it a steady 70-80 and the oil temperature didn't go above 108. I will assume this is fine (despite the 122deg on the way up whilst booting it a little) What is the highest oil reading anyone has had? ... and water temp.?
