dr_mat 0 Posted August 26, 2004 Sorry, that's beyond me, I'd guess your best bet is to try tracing it from the MAF itself. I've not looked! One idea - get the engine running, and start moving all the wires. If the engine stalls when you're just fiddling with the cables, chances are the MAF itself is ok. dinkus 10 Posted August 26, 2004 Ok - just taken the Vr out for another run and it cut out... Plugged in VAGCOM and get this: 00553 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70) 29-10 - short to ground - intermittent Can anyone tell me what this means? Bentley? I've got that problem on mine too. It means your MAF is in it's death throws (hard to start by any chance?). The engine should still run without it, it'll just be pretty rough. The MAF's are £300+ from VAG, £150ish from Bosch tho apparently.
vr6storm 0 Posted August 26, 2004 check your relays and fuses mate......could just be some corrosion on the contacts or loose connections

I have taken MAF plug off and there is some white alkaline substance in there.... :? I am going to strip it all down on Sat and clean it up and reset the fault codes - if it still comes straight up after reset then obviously new MAF time. Well, as you say it could just be corrosion on the connector that is causing the MAF effor on VAG-COM, but a dead MAF alone won't cause the engine to die, it will just make it run rough. Mind you, if it is dead, then it's not going to be helping the situation.
Scott 0 Posted August 27, 2004 Well its the only fault code generated on the VAGCOM - I have cleaned the contacts up and reset the fault codes and got the all clear again. Car is running fine now - will be giving it a full service before I put her up for sale. Cheers Scott
BlackberryVR6 0 Posted August 31, 2004 I had a simlar problem with my old 16V a few years back. It ended up being an electrical fault with the thermostat. The fuel pump also went on my old 16V, but it still started, just kept kangarooing, so not sure if it could be that.
Scott 0 Posted August 31, 2004 It actually turned out to be a corroded terminal on the MAF :D Cleaned it all up and used WD40 to protect it and all is well :D
