How long do you think VW could have kept the Corrado in prod

Recommended Posts

Like many people i feel the Corrado was short lived, Im just interested in whether you guys have the same opinion :?: :?

Also what changes do you think VW would have made to the Corrado if it was still in production today :?:

I think if it were still in production today, most of us wouldn't have one.................it would be like owning a Golf or an Escort........sorry for mentioning that word.

more power, revised dash and dials, bigger standard rims, airbags as standard, the list could go on.

the reason iit stopped being made was two fold

Karmann that built the C also built the Golf Cab and needed the factory time to make the popular Golf model, and the costs of meeting new safety rules iirc.

It was also too expensive and customers weren't buying it in the numbers VW hoped for.

If the Corrado was built from scratch with it's own unique platform and the VR6 engine was exclusively a Corrado unit, it would have sold in greater numbers. But everyone knew it was a Golf in drag with a Passat dashboard and engine.

Buidling a car not based on other models would have cost VW a fortune but Nissan managed it though with the 350Z and kept it's price competetive. I guess things are cheaper and easier these days..... but it's the cars like the Z that will always have a greater level of respect than the RX8 for example......which is just a Mazda 8 with a trick engine.

It all worked out in the end for the Corrado though and it always was greater than the sum of it's parts. Shame the buying public didn't see it that way but thankfully that the kept numbers down, which is better for us and the car's status.

If it was still in production today, it would have lost it's appeal and undoubtedly be dearer than it's rivals.

I think the Corrado could of lived a bit longer, but it had a good innings and if it wearnt sellin that well,

tis strange when u see some late cars, cause u think why?? an M reg maestro,M reg panda and a S reg Rover 200 coupe seem to stand out as you would think people would have found somethin better to buy.

well tbh 6+ years is pretty good going for a model range......ok it did have a couple of facelifts but these weren't exactly major..........i'm glad that the Corrado(so far) has never been replaced as it gives our motors that certain uniqueness about them

Exactly what I was gonna say - it lived a fairly long time. ISTR the Calibra having production continued for many years above and beyond even the Cavalier model that it was based on by around 3 years simply because of demand from the UK market, so in theory VW could have continued selling the Corrado for many years to come. But VW/Karman's costs for Corrado building were SO much higher than that of Vauxhall with the Calibra that every car VW would sell would have cost them many thousands of pounds, despite the £23k asking price. As if they didn't lose enough money on the car already!
