The 6x9 vs Chaviness Debate

Here's my two pennys worth. A decent pair of 6x9's, correctly mounted on a strong substrate, powered correcly ith a decent amp with suitably set crossover ie not getting sub bass, will sound quite acceptable. However, a pair of 600000w 6x9's powered by a Goodmans headunit, sat on a factory sagging parcel sheld hooked up with bell-wire will sound like crap. Nothing will beat a good set of amped components in a door loaded with Dynamat but correctly installed and powered 6x9's are nothing to be ashamed of. (if you mount them on a stealth shelf, you wont even see them either!). About them being too overwhelming and moving the soundstage backwards, that's what the fader is for on the h/u surely?

 

well the fader will help but for every nick on the fader you are reducing the need to have rear speakers and you still get high freq from the rear.

 

If i was to use 6x9s Id do what you said re the shelf BUT Id set a bandpass of around 100-250Hz this will give some strong midbass input without corrupting the staging.

 

altho Id still rather have a sub and good front comps :)

Absolutely. A lot of this discussion is regarding personal preference. A lot of people professing to be Sq enthusiasts/experts will not like 6x9's and have an innate and almost irrational snobbery towards them. You may also think that less is more and there is no need to have anything more than a pair of reference components and a sub for the sake of purity. In the topic of running a bandpass v-over, you are essentially wasting the speaker in that you are only using part of its functionality and are hence compromising quality on part of the frequency that you are interesting in listening to. A better way would be to use a mid and tweeter for vocals and treble, a dedicated midbass driver for midbass and a sub for sub bass. That way you are using specialised components for each part of the sound. I run Genesis components up front, DEi 8 inch midbass drivers on a stealth shelf and a 12 inch Diamond Sub. Every component has only one job to do which means the sound is clearly defined and never gets too ahead of itslef when you turn it up. Although the sunroof rattles like a bitch and drives me up the wall :lol:

If it sounds good, then it is good, simple as that. Depends what you want from your setup.

 

Everybody's ears are different so there is no right or wrong way to do it.
