Why you should change your fuel filter

Recommended Posts

I changed my fuel filter today (thanks Kev ;) ) and this is what the old one looked like inside...

Funnily enough, my fuel pump doesn't make anywhere near as much noise now :D

Yeah it was pretty nasty and my C has only done 78k miles... the fuel pump was making a huge racket and I thought it was a gonner, but you can barely hear it now 8) I'd recommend the £8 on a fuel filter over a £100 pump ;)

Easy job?

Not too bad, but it depends on what style clips you have holding the thing in place. I had a plastic cage around the filter that was bolted to the car. The bolts came out OK, but apparently the type that have plastic clips as well are a git to get off.

The hose clips are single use though, so you'll need some 10mm ish jubilee clips to clamp the hoses back on to the filter with.

Oh and watch out for the petrol that pours out ;)

Hahahah... yeah, thanks Steve.

Amateur mechanics like me need to start somewhere.. and i'm sure you've made your fair amount of mistakes :)

Unless dinkus made the same mistake I did when I was reattaching my split fuel hose that time?

Dinkus, have you got the part number for the fuel filter mate?

1H0 201 511A

I got a Bosch one from GSF for £8ish inc VAT and their part number for it is 12128

No idea what they cost from VAG tho.

i think its roughly the same from VW.........as i had mine changed 2 years ago at its annual service and they only charged me an extra £20(supplied and fitted) over their quoted service price

Dinkus, did take any photos of the procedure? I wouldn't mind knowing how to do mine, and it could be one to add to the 'how-to' database?

If I'd remembered to get my camera out I would have done, but it's really not very difficult.

I'll take pictures of what it looks like under the car now and write it up :)

of course .... the old one being full of crud would have weighed more than the new one.... so you know...your car is probably sitting EVEN higher now

 yeah probably

And they are definitely the right suspension parts, if anybody has got the latest Sprinter (arrvied this week) then take a look at the ride height of the concourse C at the back ;)
