  1. Hi there - i'm based in Bristol. Forgot to mention that i've also fitted a new distributor as the old one was leaking oil everywhere. I haven't checked the timing since - just marked the position of the old one and fitted the new one in the same position.
  2. Hi there, I haven't got a problem with my Corrado but i have with my mk2 16v Golf GTI! I bought the car a couple of months back - the body and interior are excellent but the engine needs a bit of work. To start with the engine wouldn't idle but i have fixed this with a new isv temp sender and new isv. It now idles perfectly but the problem i have is starting the car after being switched off for greater than 3-4 hrs. The engine turns over perfectly and it fires on the first turn but doesn't catch. It then turns over for around 10sec before finally catching. I have checked the cold start valve and this works ok. I was thinking that the fuel accumulator may be duff but i don't want to fork out £100 unless i'm sure. The car starts fine when it is warm. I have checked and cleaned up all the earths under the bonnet. The other things i was thinking about were thw WUR, dodgy metering head or leaking injectors - what do you think? Some help would be really appreciated. I have posted the problem on the Club GTI forum a few weeks back but they seem to have run out of ideas! Cheers Matt
  3. All sorted now! Had to chisel out the old sensor and then drill and tap the snapped bolt which wasn't easy. I bought the new sensor from AVS for £21.62 delivered - a German Febi item. This has a plastic casing but was a tight fit so i ended up dremmelling out the corrosion in the hole. It was very satifying when i started the car and the ABS light turned off! Cheers for the advice guys. Matt
  4. Afternoon all, Started the Corrado this moring and the ABS light stayed on. I've checked with VAG Com and there is a fault with the front left hand sensor. I've checked the resistance and it is open circuit so i'm pretty sure that it is the sensor that needs replacing. Anyway i tried to undo the little allen bolt and the head just sheared off....no job is ever straight forward. If i take the disk off is there good access to drill out the bolt from the front and retap? Incidently, i phoned VW in Bath to get a price for a sensor and bolt. There was no-one in the parts department to take my call so the reception took a message and asked for details of the car: Me: "its an ABS sensor for a VW Corrado" Receptionist: "Is that a commercial vehicle?" I think i'll try Euro or GSF....................... Cheers Matt
  5. Evening all, Just an update - managed to change the battery. The clamp bolt undid easily but the battery is quite a tight fit in its mount. The most difficult bit was refitting the jacket and cables for headlight loom, aircon and amp. The alarm was no problem and the car seems to be running very well although i did take it for a 30 mile drive for fun! thanks for your replies. Cheers Matt
  6. Evening all, The battery on my VR6 has died so i'm picking up a replacement from VW tomorrow. The question is when i disconnect the old one will i have any problems with the ECU basic settings or the alarm (Sigma M30). I've gone for the VW battery so that i know the padded cover will fit it. Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers Matt
  7. Evening all, I've been offered some BBS RC alloys: 17x8 PCD 100 with a 35 offset. Will these fit my VR6 with standard suspension? Also what size tyres should i be using with these? Cheers Matt
  8. Just an update. New coilpack arrived from VWspares today - very good service. Fitted it this afternoon and the car is back to normal :D . Thanks for all the advice. Cheers Matt
  9. Thanks for the replies. I've just gone ahead and ordered a coilpack from VWspares - thanks for the link. VW wanted £165+vat. I ran a diagnostics test as well and it came up with the usual fault of fuel pump relay. The car has always had this fault and i've even replaced the relay - any ideas what this means? If the coil pack doesn't do the trick i suppose i'll change the HT leads next. Cheers Matt
  10. Afternoon all, Just taken the Corrado out after about 4 weeks. The car was fine on the way to Sainsburys but after leaving the car and coming back 10 minutes later the car had developed a misfire. The idle is lumpy and the car doesn't want to accelerate very well. I'm suspecting the coilpack which i have just removed. Its the original 1995 one (it has the date on it). Does this sound like the most likely cause? Also where is the best place to buy one? Cheers Matt
  11. Thanks for the replies. I couldn't believe the price of the ABS sensor either. Rip off merchants. We have found a place called Wheelbase: http://www.wheelbase.uk.com Based in Hersham near Walton-on-Thames. They sound quite promising - has anyone else used them? Cheers Matt
  12. Evening all, My sister is having a bit of a mare with her mk3 Golf GTI. She has had the following quote from the VW dealership to do the following work (the car only went for a service!) Cost of service: £221.93 Replace nearside rear ABS sensor: £208.87 Replace PAS belt: £49 Replace distributor cap & arm: £64.53 Replace rear wheel bearing: £54.70 Resolve excessive movement in front suspension: £252.68 Replace front tyres (currently 2mm): £163.40 Centre & rear exhaust corroded (but not blowing yet): £317.39 Wishbones on front suspension need replacing: £527.78 With VAT this comes to over £2000!! (i.e. the value of the car!) These prices are well over the top so she has asked me to find out if there is a VW specialist near Epsom that anyone could recommend. Any help would be really appreciated! Cheers Matt
  13. Hi Ewan, Good luck with the search. I could be interested in your valver when you put it up for sale. I'm based in Bristol. Cheers Matt
  14. Morning all, Just been reading the latest Sprinter magazine and read an article by Ian Howe about his VR6. He's managed to source the proper aircon switches that sit above the cigarette lighter. I have the Diavia aircon switches that are positioned next to the headlight switch. Does anyone know where i can get the authentic switches from? Cheers Matt '95 Classic Green VR6
  15. Had an MoT done on the VR6 a month or so ago. The car passed with flying colours but the tester said that by front left brake was binding slightly. Indeed, after i'd been on a longish drive and felt the wheel, it was very hot. Anyway, i stripped the brake carrier , took out the pads, cleaned up the pad guides and greased everything with cooper grease. This seemed to stop the binding but after a month it has come back. Do you think i just didn't clean up the guides well enough or do you think i have a knackered bearing? Any advise greatly appreciated. Matt '95 Classic Green VR6
  16. Thats great - looking forward to the finished product! Cheers Matt
  17. Kev, My 12" Alpine sub is designed for a box between 22 and 48 litres. I understand that the moulded enclosure is 18 litres - will this affect the sound much? Cheers Matt
  18. Wife and i had a look at the Polo GTI as a replacement for her mk 4 Polo 1.6 CL. We found one at a local VW garage and took it out for a spin. I really liked the way it looked (nice body kit and wheels) and it came well spec'd with standard aircon. Have to say that i was really dissappointed by the drive though. It felt absolutely gutless. The 1.6 16v had very little torque and even at high revs it felt slow. Our mk2 Golf GTI 8v felt considerably quicker. Have to say the engine suits the Lupo GTI much better. We ended up buying a Mk4 1.8t Golf GTI which we have been very pleased with (ok it rolls like a jelly on the bends). We use it as our family car (5 dr) and it suits that very well - very good on the motorway. As a small individual car the Polo GTI is nice but don't expect a true GTI. 19. Thanks for the replies. I'm going to clear the fault codes today and see if the faults reappear whilst the engine is running. Also going to check the wiring going to the knock sensor. I've checked the Bentley manual and indeed G66 is the front sensor. If i don't have any luck i guess the next step is to replace the sensor - any idea how much it is? Think i'm also going to replace the fuel pump relay as well. I'll let you know how i get on! Cheers Matt
  20. Evening all, I've just got hold of a OBD2 lead to use on my 1995 VR6. I've downloaded the trial version of Vag Com and got the following fault codes: 01259 Fuel Pump Relay (J 17) Short to positive. (would this be caused by the aftermarket immobiliser?) 00540 Knock sensor II (G 66) No Signal (Is this because the engine isn't running?) 00513 Engine Speed Sensor (G68) Impossible signal / No signal (Is this becaue the engine isn't running?) The car appears to run pefectly so i'm not too worried about theses faults but i'd be interested to understand them. Also, i'm using the trial version of Vag Com and looking the fault codes up in the Bentley manual. Is the full version far more useful or is the trial version adequate? Cheers Matt '95 Classic Green VR6
