    I saw a 2.8 24V conversion done by PSI and it was erm, 'agricultural' shall we say. It was just the wiring and plumbing etc. The mininum was done to get it working and nothing more. If someone paid me to do it, I would do it the same way I did mine, or like Kip did his. I wouldn't want my name on some rolling bodge.

    OEMs have to meet certain NVH criteria (Noise, Vibration & Harshness) and VW have always fitted really soggy, shyte engine mounts. Probably because their engines have always been mechanically coarse until they started using balancer shafts on the recent cars.

     

    Soft engine mounts increase driveshaft wear, because they promote wheel hop on hard launches / during wheel spinning. Exhaust flex joints prematurely wear out as well. Not to mention vague and notchy gearshifts and 200+Kg of dead mass shunting around during cornering.

     

    Stiffer mounts give benefits all round but not everyone can live with the NVH compromise.

     

    Fitting MK4 shoulder mounts + dogbone was always on the agenda for my Corrado, but I never got round to it unfortunately. I don't think it would be difficult to do to be honest. The only snag is there is no dogbone mounting point on the O2A gearbox, but that's a good excuse to upgrade to a 02J or a 6 speed 02S :D

     

    The reason the MK4 onwards mounting system is better than the MK3/Corrado's is because of the engine movement arc. Perches vs Pendulum. In the Corrado VR6, you have ~220Kg of engine and gearbox perched on 3 mounts. When you give it the beans, the arc of movement is huge and that much weight rocking back and forth and side to side, from a low mounting point, impacts the handling. In the MK4, the engine is suspended and a pendulum swings instead of rocking, and pendulums are stable and concentrate the weight on a lower C of G for improved dynamics. A drawing would explain this far better than I can, but I can't be bothered :D

     

    So that's my tip to any long term Corradoistas...... fit MK4 mounts. I would also keep the Corrado front mount as well as adding a dogbone. Holding the motor in 4 places will increase NVH, but significantly reduce movement.

    The B8 is the V6 Supercharged one? Are they cheaper than a Golf R? Jeez, didn't realise that.

     

    Read good things about those B8s. Got a trick Eaton blower on it and twin chargecoolers, very nice. I know what you mean about fast estates, I like them too!

     

    Did you see the Chris Harris video of a chipped B8 beating obliterating a V8 RS4?


  4. I never pay full price for dealer parts and neither should anyone else. You're entitled to a discount and some deduct it without asking, others need coaxing.

     

    As for the differences between GSF and VW, who has analysed both in a lab to see what microns each filter can go down to, and measured the effective filtration area of both?

    I wish I could convince my missus to buy something interesting. Currently languishing in a bloody Honda!

    HGP are the guys you need for RELIABLE R32 grunt, but either way, boosting an R32 is like a Grand Design..... take the initial build price, triple it, and you'll be closer to the mark.


  6. Dunno about those as an ownership proposition. I've got a bee in my bonnet about big, obnoxious cars clogging up towns and cities with their bulk and chewing up the roads with their massive weight and massive tyres. And it's just getting the darn things in multistorey car parks and other practicalities hatchback owners take for granted.

     

    Fine if you live in the Outer Hebrides though :)

     

    I've read mixed opinons on reliability and some don't make the power either, or are said to not feel 550hp fast, but I'm sure by now the reasons for that have been found!


  7. I couldn't agree more Kev. It's years of council managers promoting useless cretins to positions below them so that they don't get 'threatened' by bright sparks coming through the doors. I've gone through two tyres in two weeks... It's a fairly easy fix, do the job properly, once.

     

    But that would mean the bureaucrat responsible for the "Do it again properly this time" department would lose their job :)


  8. It's because there's a waiting list from everyone buying them on finance. Most car supermarkets are churning them out for £280 x 24 with £1800-£2000 down.

     

    March is a good delivery date for these so he's profiteering on that fact.

    You pretend to be BT and dig up the road outside their offices. I'll come along 2 days later pretending to be the gas company and dig it up again. Then someone else can do the same a few days later, and so on.

     

    Make sure you use the cheapest contractor in the Yellow pages and ask them to use more stones than tarmac (coz it's cheaper), so that the filled in holes will just unfill themselves again 2 weeks later.

     

    My colleague and I actually witnessed the second sentence happen as we walk down the same hole ridden road to Tesco every day. Day 1: Orange lines sprayed around the worst holes. Day 2: A.N.Other cheapy contractor turns up, literallly throws in some tarmac and stamps on it. 2 days later, rain and heavy traffic had all but undone their work. The following week, an Essex Highways lorry was there repeating the work :roll:

     

    Honestly, local councillors. Feckin clueless. To see what kind of people we're dealing with, tune into "Permission Impossible" on Monday evenings. It's about local planners, but they're the same as local councillors. Middle aged, rotten teeth, awful hair styles, drab clothes. Isn't it about time we injected some youth into Parliament and local councils?


  10. The only advantage of BMW cable is it has a battery terminal crimped on! Any old 0 gauge from an ICE supplier will suffice, plus some screw on terminals.

     

    You can put it in the boot or in place of the rear armrest, with some custom cover over it. Done both and the arm rest way is better as no one ever goes in the back anyway, the wire runs are shorter and you keep your boot space.

     

    Just remember you need to:-

     

    A) Vent the gases outside of the car with a thin tube

    B) Secure it with a beefy bracket or it will smash through your back if you have a front ender.

     

    That's about it really!

    Are you sure it's not just a vibration? What engine mounts are you using? Vibratechnics? The only other thing I can think of is an over sensitive throttle / pedal. Mine can stutter just once during warm up if I come off the pedal a bit quicker than it likes, but it doesn't do it often enough for it to be irritating. Did SWICT do anything to the map?


  12. That's partly why I moved on from Corrados. I was never 100% happy with the ride / handling compromises.

     

    They are all filled with oil, but the SACHS are gas pressurised and the KW / Konis aren't. The gas just helps stabilise the damping when the oil gets thin and hot, or something like that. Bilstein B6, B8, B12 etc all gas pressurised too. Easy way to tell when they are knackered is when the damper rod doesn't return when pushed down.


  13. Tell me about it :) I had my IHI powered Octavia for 18 months before the bills just took the fun out of it. Gearboxes, clutches, blew a turbo that came to £2000 and constantly replacing vac hoses and boost pipes.

     

    I'd love another mental turbo car but not as a daily as that was.

     

    Turbos are great for systematically breaking every weak link in the chain until your house has been repossessed :lol:


  14. A big debate about SC vs Turbo wasn't my intention. I did put a "imo" at the end of my comment, because for me it was a waste of money as I hated the power delivery. Everyone has their preference though :)

     

    You pay your money and take your choice. A basic S/C setup is indeed pretty cheapish, but I spent £1000s on my S/C setup trying to get it drive nicely, eventually culminating in 321hp (12psi pulley) but only 250ish torque. I enjoyed the whole engineering side of it but it wasn't much fun to drive. Numbers only tell half the story and it didn't feel anywhere near that powerful on the road. The belt slip issues, MAF getting wet issues, no torque below 4000rpm, boost dropping 4psi at the faintest whiff of an intercooler etc etc, erm no thanks :)

     

    Turbos don't have to be expensive if you restrict yourself to sensible boost levels and everyone loves the midrange thump in the back. Now that we have 99 RON petrol, you could do a nice 8psi turbo install without even lifting the head or changing the clutch etc etc.

     

    Turbos get VERY expensive when trying to put down crazy amounts of torque!
