  1. The silicon maintanence spray is by the greases, in a plain yellow can. I'm not sure about belt dressing spray though. The tensioner is quite expensive, circa £100 I think as it's one big alloy lump you've got to change out. Check it spins freely first before going down that road! Cheers Kev 94 VR6

    Brown goop

I've got a Vibratechnics front mount on mine and a turn2 heavy duty rubber gearbox mount. The rear is stock. This is a fantastic setup (whilst it lasts!), gearchanges are much slicker under heavy acceleration and handling is better since the engine isn't moving about so much. Remember those 'Wiggly Giggly' plastic eggs with a ball bearing in it? Well that's the effect a loose engine has on handling - to a certain degree. Costs, VT front = £120 RRP but roughly £95 from certain places I cannot divulge I'm afraid. Turn2 rear = About £40 inc shipping IIRC. Harshness? A very slight amount at idle [over standard] but as stock once on the move. Kev 94 VR6
  3. I wouldn't use WD40 on rubber belts mate as it contains petroleum which eats unprotected [from petrol] rubber. Use silicon maintanence spray instead. I wonder if it's your belt tensioner? Get a long bolt (13mm head) and wind it into the tensioner hole until the pressure is totally relieved from the belt. Now spin the tensioner pulley by hand and listen for any noise and feel any odd vibrations. It should be smooth with a slight bit of lateral play. If it's really stiff or jammed completely, you know the drill. You can't rebuild them with a new bearing, replacement is the only cure. Not saying it is definitely that though, check also you've got nothing rubbing on the belt. Kev 94 VR6
  4. Mk1, fantastic, looks excellent. Well done. I wouldn't mind some more details if possible as I've yet to get round to doing mine. Did you use the Corrado or Passat motor? Did you have any difficulties getting the sliding curtain to work properly? Lastly, where did you source the Passat parts? Thanks Kev 94 VR6
  5. Here you go, explained by VW themselves from their VR6 (2.8 AAA engine though, but also applies to 2.9 ABV) tech manual:- *** Fuel Tank Ventilation *** The following inputs are used to control the fuel tank ventilation: .Engine speed .Engine load .Engine coolant temperature .Signal from throttle valve Potentiometer (G69) Fuel vapors from the fuel tank are vented to the carbon canister. When the engine is warm and above idle speed, the vapors will be drawn into the intake manifold via the carbon canister. Depending on engine load and oxygen sensor signal, a frequency valve will regulate the quantity of vapors entering the intake manifold from the carbon canister * Carbon Canister Frequency Valve (N80) * The ECU determines the duty cycle of the frequency valve to regulate the flow of fuel vapors from the carbon canister to the engine. When no current is supplied to the valve, it remains in the open position. The valve is closed (duty cycle 100%) when the cold engine is started. * Triggering: * The Carbon Canister Frequency Valve (N80) begins to operate after oxygen sensor operation has begun. Valve operation is load- and speed-dependent during driving operation. The valve is completely open at full throttle and completely closed during deceleration fuel shut-off. * Substitute function: * If power to the valve is interrupted, the valve remains completely open. This could lead to rough running at idle speed and during partial load acceleration. * Self-diagnosis: * The ECU recognizes open circuits and short circuits in the component. Kev 94 VR6
  6. Turbo technics will only sell the kits providing they receive an order for 10 of them, which is understandable as they have to get the moulds and tooling out of the loft and remanufacture them. They concentrate on Supercharing now but are still a turbo overhaul/supplier specialist. Besides which, to turbo your 16V to Stealth's 8 injector setup will cost you the wrong side of £4000 I'm sorry to say  A VR6 is a lovely car and I think you'd prefer it to be honest as the performance difference between it and a turbo'd 16V is not that great, trust me on that. Kev 94 VR6
  7. Agree, but usually power gains are seen as a result of ironing out discrepencies in the torque/power curve. A good 'chipper' will spend many hours on the dyno trying to get all the peaks and troughs out, which on the road will improve drivability no end. People like AmD quote a 12-15bhp increase based on years of experience and I believe them. Kev 94 VR6
  8. We have a mixture of coilies and standard McPherson strut setups amongst us. Roddy (VR6storm) has just fitted some Koni coilovers and is well pleased with them. For £400 you can get a set of Koni top adjustables and some H&R springs. That is a fine setup but not the lowest at -30mm. Kev 94 VR6
  9. Should get a healhty torque increase as that is one long inlet pipe! To stop the water getting in the air box, you need to attach some kind of rubber strip inside the inner wing to create a water channel. Kev 94 VR6
  10. Moderators, this kind of illiterate and rude drivel belongs on the ClubGTI forum. Can we do something before all the decent people leave? Kev 94 VR6
  11. A tenner and Mars Bar should cover it  Kev 94 VR6
  12. Let me know how you get on with that as mine still needs doing, haven't found the time! Mine has gone in exactly the same place yours has. The Corrado repair kits used to be £23 per side! VW are stitching us up again. Not sure on that but I don't see why not. See how you get on with the cables! Kev 94 VR6
  13. http://www.thinkauto.com You need a 13 row by 235mm cooler plus a VR6 fitting kit. Let me know when you've got it and I'll advise you how and where to fit it. Cheers Kev 94 VR6
  14. Hmmm, a lot of tripe on the forum tonight isn't there? My previous car to my current VR6 was a MK2 16V Turbo which had 210bhp and 205lb/ft torque and that only just got past a Corrado VR6. I've had plenty of MK2 16Vs and they are way slower than a VR6. Yeah 16Vs do loosen up nicely but it's so hard to find a good one. Kev 94 VR6
  15. Hardly a VR6 destroyer, a similar output perhaps. Try and keep things in perspective. Marginally cheaper insurance. What happens when all the G Laders are used up? Cheaper to run? most of my mates get less mpg from their G60s than I do my VR6 and how much are G60 spark plugs? The VR6 is still in production, albeit in 24V form but the G60 had a very short life span by comparison....I wonder why? Says who? Have you driven a VR6? Wrong. The G60 weighs 1155Kg and the VR weighs 1210Kg. The fact Corrados have a heavy engine means nothing in the real world and people grossly exaggerate the affect this has on the VR's handling. Next you'll be saying a Porsche 911 is a bad handler because most of it's weight is over the rear wheels! It isn't, so pay attention to reality and not urban myths. They're hardly what I'd class as tuning. They're just bolt on bits that make more noise and give little extra power. Most discerning motorists realised that years ago. Kev 94 VR6

    Brown goop

The power steering resevoir is behind the battery, in front of the washer bottle and the fluid it contains is red, shouldn't be brown goop. There is nothing directly underneath the washer bottle that I can think of off the top of my head, except the gearbox!. Maybe someone has fabricated some kind of oil catch tank and mounted it under the washer bottle on your car? That would certainly contain brown goop (emulsified water and oil residue). We need a pic!? Kev 94 VR6
  17. I used to use Vauxhall oil in my *cough* Cavalier and it seeped out of most of the seals, so I put Quantum silver in it and never saw the problem again! I even used to use it in my BMWs! It's good stuff. Not sure who makes it, probably one of the big 4 - Shell, Mobil, Esso or Fina. It's all pretty much the same stuff but each manufacturer endorses a particular oil for their engines. In our case, look for VW501.1 classification and you'll be OK. Kev 94 VR6
  18. It's not quite as deep as Tornado and it doesn't go pink in the sunlight :D It's actually a nice colour, I'm just not that keen on it as a Corrado colour. The curves are better suited to the metallics and pearls we're all familiar with. Kev 94 VR6
  19. Alright chaps, enough yeah? Each to our own and all that, we don't want to put our newbies off. Cheers Kev 94 VR6
  20. G60 faster? That's correct, all you need in a G60 is a K&N air filter and it'll completely obliterate a VR6. In fact, the G60 is so much faster, I'm trading my VR6 tomorrow :D Kev 94 VR6
  21. Definitely worth doing mate. It's so effective, I rarely bother to check my oil temp anymore, even in this heat! Bear in mind you won't undercool your oil since you retain the stock heat exchanger and the Mocal only kicks in when it's valve opens at 80 degrees. If in the winter you feel it's undercooling, you can simply block the Mocal with some tinfoil or something, although from past experience, this won't be required. VR6s lose a bit of power when they get really hot, so there's another reason for installing one :D Kev 94 VR6
  22. The passat roof mechanism is exactly the same although it seems to work better in the Passat! The only difference is the Passat has a tinted glass roof which is a near spot-on fit in the corrado roof aperture. There is a very slight gap as the seals on steel and glass roofs are different but most people don't notice it. The glass roof is also ever so slightly more rounded in the middle, again, hard to spot straight away. It's a good mod and entirely up to you but since the whole lot has to come out of the C anyway to repair the stock roof system, why not stick a better one in it's place! Kev 94 VR6
  23. Oh and there are 3 sensors in the stat housing too, change their seals if leaking also. Ta Kev
  24. Yep, most likely leaking from the thermostat housing. Very common on the VR. It's not a particularly nice job, I can tell you! I was lucky because I had my radiator out when I did mine but doing it in situ must be a mare. Basically, you have a thermostat housing to block seal, thermostat to housing seal and that long plastic pipe that goes along the front of the block also has a seal in the housing. Best thing to do is replace the whole darn lot....housing, all seals and the thermostat. Gently sand the block mating face with some emery cloth and use a little silicon sealant but don't use any sealant on the thermostat or pipe seals. That should do it!! Kev 94 VR6
  25. Sorry dude, the VR has a belt tensioner that applies the correct tension by it's own springs, so therefore impossible to have the belt running too tight. The distant whine is common on the VR engine, you do have to listen for it though. It's really quite on mine and not always noticeable. Could be alternator bearings or something. The part you need has been replaced by a generic 95-97 Passat & Corrado 'Repair Kit'. It's £46+VAT. This consists of a new cable with guides (the bits that snap). The best thing to do, if you can find one, is fit the complete assembly from a 95-97 Passat, providing you can live with a glass roof. To check your HT Leads, get a multimeter (Halfords sell them) and check each lead is around 6KOhms. If they are, then the leads are fine. Worn plugs tend to affect the whole rev-range, so you may have 1 or more sensors out. G28 engine speed sensor is a common one, the Cam position sensor is another and the 02 sensor is yet another! I doubt you have a defective O2 sensor but to check it, prod your multimeter probe into the far right wire (white) of the plug that's on the rear engine mount. Put the other probe to ground and with the engine running (when hot), the O2 multimeter voltage (DC) should fluctuate rapidly between 0.1 and 1 volt. If it stays at a constant voltage, usually 0.4, it's dead. Kev 94 VR6
