somehow I now don't have the space to put a car in a garage, its now full of washing machines and other domestic rubbish!

when you held the chains up together old against new, you could see the links running off, and god know what it was doing under load, probablies much worse.

I am not too concerned mate. I am treating it all like an enormous service. while the engine is out i have done, chains, thermostat, water pump, senders, all stuff that fails, and all stuff that is a pig to get at when the engine is in the car.

i will get there.

well i have done all my chains, there was definate stretch evident, so I have basically eliminated all possible problems with timing.

only thing left to try now, are coils, and another ecu!

what a weird piece of design. that slog in the locked cam sprocket basically means the cam will not time up properly according to the guide.

got to be right though. least you dont have to spend a fortune on a sprocket now.

Inlet off, rocker cover off, undo the bolt remove sprocket, fit new sprocket.

sounds easy but its not lol

front panel will have to come off to get the inlet off, and so it goes on. Not a major job all things considered. How many miles does your engine have on it?

I am writing a letter to audi, as this is a major design flaw.

try and hold the revs at 2000rpm in neutral and you will see if its the same problem.

the sprocket is 300 quid from audi, and you will need a new stretch bolt with it.

Hey dude, I dare say i know exactly what is wrong with your engine.

I have bought an Audi A3 3.2 dsg, and it exhibits the same characteristics. To check that its the same problem as mine put the car in neutral and try and hold the revs at 2000rpm, if its the same issue as mine it will be impossible to hold it at that rpm.

basically the fault is with the rear sprocket locking pin, it wears its locating hole, and allows the exhaust cam to sit in a more retard resting position than it should, making the exhaust valves stay open fractionally after the inlet valves have started opening- this is good at high rpm, as the vaccuum pulls the mixture through, but at low rpm where cylinder fill is an issue, then unburnt mixture will just be pouring out the exhaust manifold.

the net effect is rough low to mid rpm running, and poor mpgs.

Well its the end of an era!

Neal came tonight and took the corrado away. Time to relax a little and leaving modding alone for a while. I think i will come back to it at some point though.

I will pop back on here from time to time to see how everyone is doing, and maybes even to have a look see what Neal has done with my old car :)

erm, they do indeed breath quite a bit, but they shouldnt collapse?

when you plant the throttle it should actually expand as the throttle body is opened and the air rushes in. It will contract when you lift off the throttle.

I noticed the 2.8 one did it a hell of a lot more than the 3.2 one.

the 2.8 manifold is completely different, just smaller everywhere, I dont think it will fit.

Whether barrel mechainism inside fits or not i am not sure, that could be worth a try!

unfortunately modifying cars doesnt really hold my interest anymore. It just seems like an expense and hassle. I am more interested in surfing, and learning to play the guitar - I am turning into a proper hippy lol

Walesy - weird that you have the 2 cars I have been thinking about going for! In my thoughts i considered pushing the boat out and getting an 4.2 audi S4 avant, but again I dont know whether i am bothered about that either.

I think my minds virtually made up to be honest. I would personally like to sell it whole, but that depends what people are willing to pay for it.

I had a figure of 8.5k in mind, and bearing in mind what this car is, its cost me a hell of a lot more in parts, let alone bloody sweat and snot.

I do have a similar lifestyle to yourself, I like to go walking and mountain biking out in the middle of nowhere, I have a dog that has a fetish for jumping in muddy puddles, and I need a vehicle to carry me, my friends and my surfboards, or snowboards to the coast, or to the alps.

There is the uniqueness of this car yes, and if i took the same time scales to build another i would have past 40 by the time i completed it lol but, I am just swaying away from performance cars altogether. The corrado is mental quick, and I have a supercharger to make it quicker, but i just cant be bothered. Was also thinking of a nice A4 estate tdi or something like that as a practical car.

I couldnt afford both really. and between the car the bike the missus car and the transporter I would be loathed to pay out all that insurance and tax to the leaches.

dunno yet. I am going to continue fettling it, but its just not what i need in a car anymore. Looks nice, outstanding performance, not much practicality, and I do 25,000miles a year on average.

Not sure what to do to be honest. No point being sentimental about it. :shrug:

minor update:

I had a few issues with the prop clattering the steering rack under hard acceleration, but i have sorted it now. Interior is still in bits and needs finishing off, but its driving fine. I had to replace a ball joint, which put my tracking out a mile, Couldnt bring myself to pay another 25 quid for basic tracking when i need to get the thing proper 4 wheel aligned, so i set it up by eye - its spot on!

I havent got the rear anti roll bar back on yet, so i think there's more improvements to be had, but it handles really nicely, turn in is very sharp and solid, and it seems I can get on the gas so much earlier in the corners and it just pulls me through it and slingshots out. Corner exit speeds are awesome.

That said, I am still not convinced its the car for me. I just drive around in it thinking I am too old for this. I like modern insulated vehicles, I have been spoilt by nice new company cars for the last 6 year. and its not really practical - i have nowhere to put me dog! she certainly wont fit in the boot. and its tight in the passenger footwell when there is someone in the passenger seat, plus i dont want her in there with my beige interior when she's up the naffs.

My cams are unspecified leon - they were ripped out of a smashed r32 that was done at amd.

The cams could well make a big difference to the character and response of the engine, must be a combination of that and the gearing.

Yeah I was going off what you have been saying about yours tbh, and Pete's for that matter who also said his was rapid. But as Kev said, people all have a different perception of speed and I was brought up racing motorbikes so to me if it's not R1 quick it's just not quick

I was out in an audi TT 3.2 dsg on friday, and although nice, my corrado completely marmalised it in a straight line drag.

The only difference between the cars apart from the 250kg weight, is my engine has high lift cams and a remap, aswell as a quality exhaust on it, but i think the main thing is the gearing. My gears are much closer spaced together to enable rapid acceleration.

everyone who has been in my car has been amazed at the pace of it.
