1. Right then, im covinced im being done over by this guy for £400, has anyone had or seen the fabric part of a rado or golf doorcard retrimmed ??

anyone got the number for snappy gaitors or MJ's ????

    Jimmi,,,,,,,,

  2. I wouldnt like to think i had to run my corrado everyday, the costs would be huge !!!

out of interest what did you do with your RC's ???

    Jimmi........................

  3. JIMMI, is that definitely true about the VIC? I need one but have been putting it off because I haven't sorted my dents yet, but if you're right I can sort this out ASAP and stop worrying about it.

Definatly correct mate, i deal in bike salvage and when they need to go for a VIC check they are pretty bare, infact some of them go up straight from auction !! make sure its nice and clean under the bonnet and stuff as they dont like manky stuff !!

Cheers Jimmi, still got a few things to do but not much more just waiting on parts now.

Had a water leak thats sorted and the downpipe was hitting the bracket that used to hold the old gear rods on the MK2 ect,but all fixed now

I work at chester le street in Birtley thats where the car is,if ya dont mind having a look that will be great ! I will buy ya a pint

Or i can leave it for a few months when the car is back on the road and i can afford to get the paint done

Im loving the chatter from the turbo when you rev it up.......lush

I only live a few miles from birtley, i live right next to Warden law gokart track if you know where that is, where abouts in birtley do you work? bell trucks? you'll probably know me already if you do !

  5. If it needs a VIC check you will neeed to pay a £31-00 (ish) fee and fill in a -Application for a vehicle idenity check (VIC) - form and send it to your local DVLA office look on http://www.vosa.gov.uk for yours.

Car doesnt have to be fully repaired it just needs to be able to move under its own power and be near enough in one piece, nothing mechanical or repair wise is checked only the ID numbers to make sure the car isnt a stinker, its a farce really when i first heard it was goin to come out i thought they where going to check the accident repairs on the cars as well just to make sure no-one put any 2 halfer's or dodgy motors back on the road but they simply dont care !

have you got the bits to repair your car mate? ill have a bumper, front panel lights etc if you need them.

Im not a huge expert on this Jimmi but ive been led to believe that a grand up to 1500 gets the whole interior retrimmed.

Therefore for just the doors 400 seems steep. Who is the guy doing the job??

Im not an expert either but i have had a few cars and van's retrimmed and the most i payed was £1200-00 which was for a full retrim inc all doorcards this was on a 99 SWB Shogun, it was about 5 years ago but surely it hasnt gone up that much ! The guy i took it to was in sunderland, he is $hit hot and the best round here by far but im not sure he is £400 good !

    PS fans workin yet ?

  7. Hi guys i need a bit of price guidance here, i dropped my two front doorcards off at my local trimmers to be trimmed in black nappa leather to match my TT seats and i nearly fell over when he gave me the price !!!

I only wanted the part which is now fabric trimming however he said this is impossible and he would have to trim the whole door card in leather and the cost would be £400+vat !! I felt violated, i left the shop with the doorcards in my hand before he had chance to pull my pants down ! Am i right in thinking this is far too much ? Ive give the guy a lot of work, he has done a couple of complete retrims for me and only last week rebuilt all the seats in the press corrado im restoring, i think he is trying to hump me on the price, what do you think ??

Has anyone had just the fabric section on a corrado or golf card retrimmed??

    Any help welcomed

  8. Nothing at all mate, if the current MOT is in date. If not simply re mot it.

If its a cat C you may have to do a VIC check where they check the vin numbers are right but this is only if you have to surrender your logbook, as its your car you have crashed and are keeping it you will probably not have to surrender the V5 and it probably wont get recorded ie it will still be HPI clear.

  9. hi mate

coolrado is right its schultz or stnechip thats on there, its of a rubbery consistency. you can buy it in the can but its bad, you need a shultz gun (15) 1 tin of "gravi tex" or similar (10) and a small compressor to put it on with, it will go on the same as the oe stuff if you get black it will save painting it after.

    jimmi....

  10. Just be careful,

I know most people have loans, finance etc on cars but ive seen far too many mates etc get into trouble with debt on cars etc that im pleased ive never had to borrow to buy cars and bikes, ive always saved up and bought them outright myself. Its not too bad now that im a little older and i can afford nice motors (dare not list what i own now  ) but when i was younger and all my mates had new cars on finance and loans i was driving about in sub 1k bangers and stuff because thats all i could afford.

Its paid off in the long run though !

I'd much much rather have a 2k car that was mine than a 15k car i was just "renting" !!

  11. Cheers for the comments guys, goldie saw the car on sunday last week when it was just out of the paint shop. You should see it now mate its really taking shape ! I took a foto of the back 1/4 today, is it shiny enough ????

jimmi the prep work is looking good can't wait to see the finished job, i use the lechler paint and laquer too as it decent stuff, heard about this dolphin stopper glaze before any ideas where i can get some as the lechler stopper i used last time showed up after a few months on panel i did before - slightly sunk

Lechler stopper isnt much cop to be honest mate, however it still shouldnt of sunk ! what sort of primer did you use ? was it on a bonnet by chance?

Dolphin glaze is ace, it is as thin as water and is the only filler i use on bike panels, it actually flows on panels just like paint ! its made by UPOL, try and find a local UPOL stockist or look on the web !

  12. If its chucking a load of smoke all the time its probably a combination of a few parts not just the stem seals. to rebuild an engine with piston rings, valve guides etc it will be around £400 in parts alone, if you cannot do it yourself add xxxx amounts for labour !

To be honest i would just change the motor, if you really want to rebuild yours you can keep it to one side and do it at your leisure !

16V motors are cheap enough, ive got a good 1.8 16v for sale, doesnt smoke. has FSH i only want £75-00 for it and i can send it down to you on a pallet, you could fit this and get your car mot'd etc than you have all the time in the world to completely rebuild the original engine, not that i think you would bother once the car is up and running again.

  13. Hi mate

the wiring instructions on the first page of the thread (cant remember who it was by) your probably looking at are wrong ! i meant to post about that but forgot, i found this when i fitted goldies a week or two ago !

I had exactly the same probs as you when i turned the lights on, ie no volt guage !

As for the oil pressure, the guage will go off the scale when the sender isnt connected, it will make it read lower when connected.

I took goldies guages apart so i could work out the wiring by lookin @ the circuit board, i may still have the piece of paper i worked it out on in the garage ill look in the morning.

What do you need to know about the sender i may be able to help.

  14. Update time!

Ive worked pretty much full time on the car for the paset two weeks, its been worth it tho !

The car is pretty much finished now, ive finished the bodywork i have painted the full car inside and out, the only thuing i havent done is the engine bay only because it didnt need it ! Its an awful lot of work painting cars compared to the motorbikes im used to, the resparay was an awful lot of work, firstly i had the front and rear screens removed along with the rear 1/4 glass i then removed the bumpers, doors, bonnet, boot these where put to one side so i could paint the shell, i prepped and painted the shell including the door checks, boot checks , wing rails & slam panel the car was painted on axle stands with the struts removed so i could underseal the inside of the arches then paint them in red. The car was painted in its original shade of tornado red, i applied 4 coats of Lechler 2k paint and finished off with a coat of Lechler Acrifan clearcoat. The finish is stunning its so shiny and is gonna stand out on the road !

I prepped all of the other panels and painted them off the car, the bonnet was paint strippered back to bare metal first to stop any sinkage of the paint, i painted all these the same way as the shell doing the boot & doors inside and out. I still need to paint the wingmirrors and the spoiler but they will be one of the final jobs. Sorry ive got no decent foto's of the car since its been painted but i am unable to get any as the car is covered in bubble wrap so i dont scratch it during reassembly ! as soon as the wrap is off ill take some !

The interior has been completely removed for the paintwork, prior to reassembly i have had the carpets & headcloth valeted and have washed all the plastics, door trims & dash in hot soap water while they where all out of the car. The seats have been fully reconditioned, i have had them rebuilt in the correct spec, (green fleck, vinyl backs etc) i have used a mis match of 5 interiors to do the seats, passenger seat bolsters to go into drivers seats etc. Its worth it tho the seats look completely as new and aside from the bodywork they are one of the most important parts of a car. A new heater matrix was fitted along with a new set of control cables and an unbroken dash surround. The sunroof mech was rebuilt (im now a sunroof expert for anyone who is interested !) I also managed to find a low mileage steering wheel & gearknob which look like new. a new throttle cable and oe pedal rubbers where also fitted. I managed to get some brand new Genuine VW rubber mats as well, The original tax disc holder and number plates had "VAG press office" etc on them so a sign writer friend has made perfect replica's of them for me. The interior is like that of a brand new car now im really impressed with it ! verything fits as it should and i have replaced any missing screws and clips, hopefully this will mean its rattle free !! I also have installed a Clifford Alarm system.

I have sorted some wheels out from LIPPY on here which i need to get collected then i will refurb them, the engine is as sweet as a nut and has been fully serviced, the chassis needs some attention tho ! I have fitted new balljoints, track rod ends, drop links, bottom arm bushes, shockers, f & r discs & pads, Top mounts along with a set of "fresher" springs from a 95 rado im breaking. I have a set if 3 engine mounts to change this week before the bonnet goes on as well.

I have kept receipts and docunmented the rebuild with foto's all the way thru, i think the car is goin to be a stunner when its finished next week, it will be something to take around shows etc, whether or not i will be the person doing it is another question !!

Next update will see the car 100% finished !!

Ah, MotoMan, I stumbled on that site a while back and he's got some good info in there. I like his 'gallery' of pistons

The only reservation I have against dry cranking is you only have 20 miles worth of honing for the rings to cut into, and you need high cylinder pressures to force the rings onto the bore walls to give a nice cut.....but the dry cranking with brake cleaner is defo worth a shot for a few turns. A magnetic sump plug would be nice too!

Looking forward to seeing how the Emerald works out. I will pop down to Walker's when you get it mapped as he's local to me. I want to chat to him about it aswell, so give me a shout when you've got a set date

The brake cleaner does work well as i "rinses" the bores out nicely !

Ive got big hopes for the Emerald i think kev, im looking like getting down there on the last weekend in march it gives me a bit of a deadline to work to ! I think ill be there for the weekend so you might have to tell me where the best travellodge is kev !

Im in a bit of quandry as to what to do, im thinking of fetching the car down on my car trailer as its a long drive from sunderland down to there and i dont really want any "teething" problems on the way there, i think i will run the car in up here for a few hundred miles with the boost wound right off running the oe management just to sort any leaks etc out then ill trailer it down to dave where i can connect the emerald up and send some boost into it !

I started lining all the parts up in my garage today ready to start going into the car, the engine is looking ace its going to be a shame to hide it away !

Ill get some pics up !

  16. Hi mate

the bottom hose is hot so therefore the thermostat is working fine, have you had chance to replace the temp sender on the radiator?

If the thermostat is opening then i'd guess the new temperature gauge sensor i fitted is sending incorrect readings, i.e the water temp isnt realy what the guage says !

I can get a replacement one from mill and post it down if you like, its a piece of pi$$ to change.

give me a ring or PM if you want

Nice one!! 500hp... the T70 will give you a lot more than that

You'll like the Schimmel spec 3.0, makes the midrange boost kick really hard. Looking forward to seeing the built motor, got any pics?

That is going to be one mint Rado when fully complete, it'll be practically brand new from head to toe!!

Yeah i think with some tweaking and a bit of bottle 700hp will be attainable, not too sure how long it would last for @ that hp tho !!

The car will be just like new, every part of the car has been removed and replaced or powdercoated, infact it will be better than new, the only thing im leaving is the paint which is perfect anyway.

Ive got another VR of 93 vintage which i am in the process of breaking, my plan is to keep the shell and convert it to 4wd using a Haldex setup, this is more of a long term plan tho, (next winter) i think ill buy a cat B Audi TT or R32 (breakers licence comes in handy!) to act as a donor, i dont really want to chop the floor etc out of this car its too nice !!

reminds me of rebuilding mk2 escort crossflow engines - another train of thought is to crank the engine over dry for the rings to bed into the cylinder walls - done this before and it works -

i'll second this method but by dry cranking as a similar proposal to thrashing as suggested by mr schimmel - in case everyone was thinking the wires had totally lost the plot with such a wild suggestion

Na your right mate and kev hasnt been smoking jamaican woodbines ! for a performance engine running in like a pussy is a no no ! My process on the bike motors i build (a few) are to build the motor with a bit of slik 50 on the bits as they are assembled. Before the oil is filled i normally spray a load of brake cleaner down the bores than turn the engine over for a while, it works similar to H8RRA's dry cranking method apart from it will flush any small bits of dirt etc out with the brake cleaner. after that fill the oil and run it for 5 mins or so on tick over checking for leaks obscure noises etc, turn it off until its cooled down a bit. Restart engine and run it on the roads working it hard for a few miles then let it cool, do this 3 or 4 times and then its run in process is finished, i know i can give it back to the customer and no matter what he does it will be fine ! If you look @ this website http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm the guy explains the theory in more detail, read it and see if it makes sense !

Ive just taken delivery of my EMERALD K3 management system from dave walker, i ordered it a month or so ago but ive been waiting for the loom to be made. The ECU looks ace, its the latest one which has 3 switchable maps. speaking to Dave about it he seems quite keen to map the car he told me he has just done a charged golf which was runnin past his rollers max reading of 450bhp, he is quite keen to see what mine will run. The car is provisionally booked in for the last weekend in march so i have a deadline to work to, i just need to get this 16v press car finished so i can crack on with the VRT.

Im off to the garage now !!

  18. Looking good mate, i dont think there are many non FI VR's left around the sunderland/Durham area with yours, H8RRA's, Chris VR6NOS's and mine about ! have you lowered the CR ratio on yours with a spacer ?

We will have to have a meet when the weather gets nicer !

Bit late now but do you know of the place at the end of scotswood road? They have a pipe bending machine and do stainless and titanium etc and produce pipes such as your downpipe in one piece. alternatively, they sell pre-manufactured bends or can bend to any angle. i often get a bag of irregular bends from them that they've accumulated from previous jobs. they also have a flaring machine - for example, i've had 55mm stainless pipes flared up to 80mm no problem.

This is the guy who tried to make a manifold for my car, he made a right ar$e of it, it wouldnt fit and he still wanted me to pay £400 for it ! Id payed a 50% deposit and he wouldnt refund it ! He said he couldnt mod it either !, i still need to see him bout my refund this has reminded me !! suppose he will be ok to get offcuts etc from tho !

  19. Im busy rebiuilding the interior on one of my corrados and i have a bit of a problem ! I completely removed the front seatbelt setup and the reels retracted into the reel. The problem is i now cannot pull them back out, no matter haw slpwly or what position i try to pull them they lock after a few mm's im pulling my hair out. I tried to dismantle one to see how it worked but that ended up in a wound up piece of spring steel firing at me.

I know its not a fault with one particular reel as ive tried some spares i have and they are the same !!!

    Help!!!!!!

TT seat where a bit of a bitch tbh, ive seen another guy on here fit them but when i tried to do it that way the base of the seat was too high and my mullet was touching the roof ! I ended up ba$tardising the subframes to make the seats sit as low as i wanted, if you want any help i can show you exactly what i did.

Never spoke to him personally mate, but i had a lot of emails from him when i was ordering and stuff and he seemed a good fella, his stuff is A1 and the service is great, thumbs up from me !

    CHEESEGRATER

Cheers for the comments mate, car is coming on now, I want it to be ready for sometime in April its going to be a summer weather car only from now on ive spent too much time on the suspension & engine bay to get it up th the tits in the rain so I will be taxing it for the 1st of May all goin to plan.

Ive bought a load more bits for the car in the past month or so, i even statted to tot up how much i had tied up in the car i stopped when i get to 12k and still had a big pile of receipts in my hand, its a lot of money to of spent considering ive only had it 9mths ! But i think the end result will be worth it, it has been completely rebuilt from top to bottom with every consumable replaced with new vag bits and it has THAT engine ! The car is still in bits with parts in crates all over the place but my plan is not to touch it until i have every single part, i think i could reassemble it in a good day which is better than a few hours here and there.

Here is a quick rundown on what ive been doin since the last update !

Engine: The motor is pretty much all assembled and ready to go, i managed to source a brand new VR6 crankshaft from a dealers old stock, the block was rebored to a 3.0 and i have fitted JE lowered comp pistons along with Glyco engine bearings and shells. The oil return has been tapped into the block instead of the sump. i painted the block in bright yellow and had the brand new sump and engine mounts powder coated in silver. The head was vapour blasted then had the tiniest skim before being pressure tested, i then rebuilt it with new VAG lifters, seals, guides and brand new valves. I refitted the head using a schimmel steel head gasket and ARP bolts, a set of Shimmel FI camshafts where also fitted followed by a custom painted rocker cover. i replaced the chains and guides etc as well as all new engine sensors etc. The only thing i am waiting on for the engine now is the oil filter housin and the belt tensioner to be returned from the polishers. The engine is sat on my engine stand now and it looks ace, its gonna be a shame to put it under the bonnet !!

Interior: TT seats are in, i need some storm heated seat switches to wire them in anyone know how much they are new ?? the door card are back from the trimmers they have been fone in black nappa leather to amtch the seats. Ive made a start on the roll cage, i initially wanted a proper cage but ive now decided on a good strong bolt in one, a weld in one isnt gonna be very practical tbh !

Suspension: All the mechanical bits have been rebuilt and changed, im still undecided on the shocks and springs, i know one thing the koni coilovers arent goin back on, im honestly thinking of some non coilover koni's ive always used them on my other cars and they have been ace, i wont be running the car very low as i want some motorbike chasin B road action so i think they will be fine !

Exterior: nothing is gonna change apart fron a repair to the front wing, i chipped some paint off it when doin the suspension ! Bugger !

Ill get some pics up asap ive been far too busy to do it lately !

    500hp here we come !!
