  1. I though i replied to this but its not appeared? so apologies if two reply s pop up. I have a very similar noise, seems louder to the left(airbox side) and back(manifold) of the engine. but is def in line with the tappets timing. it has alway been there even after timing chains, guides, head rebuild, redone. does not seem to impair the running of the car. and is not so noisy that i deemed it a issue. However the car was just hit in the rear, it bent the rear axle and the exhaust is now blowing from the CAT. Since this the engine noise is much worst and is more of a 'ding-a-tee-ding' noise than a tappety-tap noise more metallic in its sound. this would defiantly coincide with a poss crack or leak from the manifold. would a loss in pressurisation of the exhaust cause this noise, why would this cause the noise?, i can not quite get my head round that, but is does seem a coincidence with my car exhaust shook violently any the crack you mention and the same noise. i assume (although thats alway dangerous) i mush have a crack or such somewhere. it was my initial though though i did not know why. i will keep you updated with my car. I did have the chance to hear the chains chatter as people call it on my car a while back when the oil pressurised top chain tensioner malfunctioned (actually i screwed it in with out releasing the valve and burst the seal) and it does not sound like your issue, plus that clearly came from the chain cover. The only other thing is my car has been sat at the garage for 4 weeks and always has issues when not run for a long while much like it owner. so poss a good run would help the issue. i will update Nick ---------- Post added at 11:06 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:00 PM ---------- dr mat's assessment sound extremely plausible also, i will check this.
  2. hi i have a very similar issue in fact I just made a post. my vr has always had a little tappy/rattle from the engine, had timing chains, guides and a head rebuild but they are still there, its not much and dies down a after a while but is there a little, Any way someone just drove into the back of the car bent the rear axle and clearly shook the exhaust as it is is now blowing at the cat, however since this there is a much louder 'ding-a-tee-ding' noise, sounds like tappets but i'm not convinced, it is more audible if i listen over the manifold or the air-box side of the engine, it has been sat at the body shop for 4 weeks also. i was just thinking could there be a issue with the manifold that could exaggerate or be linked to the noise and saw this post. i will keep an eye on this, would a crack in a manifold or loss of pressure cause any potential damage to the engine if i run the car? seems a big coincidence i'm sure we are on to something nick
  3. great thanks will price them tomorrow. any bolts i need to buy while im there? the rear beam is bent (takes some doing i know) so i need to replace thus new mounts nick
  4. Are VW different to the gfs then? gfs are £16 each which seems reasonable what might vw be price wise ( im being lazy i will check tomorrow) Thanks for the replys
  5. what is the opinion on rear bushes, (a pain to remove)? i normall buy all my bits from either GFS and have always found the bits to be excellent and often original, or i have bought them from VW and often little bits are reasonable, whats the verdict with the rear bushes, i def want standard not poly, i went down this route with my MK1 golf 16v and while good always i find compromise the comfort a little. But are original VW really any better than premium GFS or are they indeed made in the same factory? also is there any other bits i need while replacing? bolts perishables etc Thanks NIck
  6. i have a claims company dealing with it not my insurance, they are dealing with the 3rd party insurance. worth noting that while claims companys are great as they avoid me claiming though my insurance thus suffering a rise in premium (apparently they can do this even in a non fault) if you are dis pleased with the verdict you can not involve the finance ombudsman or other bodys as your contract is not with the 3rd party, seems wrong but they told me themselfs. so its county court or lots of hounding. the irony is the hire car supplied has now exceeded the cost of the car (around 3k), not to mention storage fees claims company fees, etc i cant see them paying less than 10k including costs! I have had a independent valuation today so i will see what he proposes, it is daft if they made a reasonable offer i would accept but to be honest i happy to take up the argument with them. I have received my car back to avoid charges as i believe if they stick to there original offer they will only pay up until they made that offer or just after, we need some motoring press coverage of this!!!
  7. the exhaust is definably blowing around the cat so is a little louder. i just wonder if their is anything around the manifold that could create a "ding-a-tee-ding" i have to say it is in time with the tappets but they were fine before. i wonder if it is because i have been driving and thus are used to a hire car but as thats a diesel so i would hope not. any ideas welcome and i will update when i find more.
  8. My 92VR6 was hit in the rear wheel arch/wheel while parked and the insurance have declared it a write off. obviously the insurance company of the 3rd party offered a pittance £250 followed by £1295 for the car as it is deemed a insurance right of (bodywork alone £1800 for insurance repair) i would expect the car to fetch between 2300-2800, couple of minor scratches cracked fog light but other wise in good condition with 160.000 miles. any one had experience with the insurers? they seen a law to themselfs, I have posted similar adds with values of very good condition cars ranging between 3500-4500 for them to deduct from for my cars condition. I would say they were using the glass guide for there figures which i believe are around £1000, but in fact hey have based it on a Corrado they found priced at 2295 and deducted 800 for scratches and broken fog etc, and 200 for high mileage. this car was not standard with weird two tone paint non operable sunroof etc etc, so i feel they should use 3000-3500 as their start point as they have clearly sought to bace it on current values. Any help welcome, I find it funny they complain people are dishonest with whiplash then do everything but break the law to short change us. if any one has some motoring press contacts let me know I will draft a letter to this affect. is it really ethical to knowingly offer bellow market value for a car (in relation to the £250 offer) assuming people will just accept out ignorance! then post a check in my case for £950 (deducting £350 for salvage) and do this with out consulting me in the hope i accept cash the check and are legally bound to this. if i acted this way in my professional life I would be in court. Classic car insurance on renewal.
  9. ok apologies for my interpretation of of sounds to follow. I have a 92 vr6 (a late 92 as it comes up 93 on some systems) it has always had a tiny "ticky-a-tee-ticky" noise as many vrs seem to have and has had a rebuild so im happy with that, however after someone hit the rear of it while parked the exhaust has come slightly loose (around the cat on first inspection) and the noise now seems to be a 'ding-a-tee-ding" or possibly a "ping-a-tee-ping" noise, a little more metallic. i hear it more to the airbox side of the engine or the back. any ideas? i wonder if its the sound changing with a loose exhaust or if the bang did something. I know sometimes these things can be a coincidence so advise on just the noise with out reference to the exhaust or bump in the bum more than welcome. It has had all chains and tensioners changed, and runs well aside this. Also i am changing the rear axle a a precaution as the other car caught the rear wheel a bit, do i need to replace the bolts on the stub axles and main mounts to the car. any tricks for this procedure welcome.
  10. Do you have rear beam and still have passenger fog light? When can I pick up?
  11. Do you have rear beam? Is it removable were the car is?
