That sounds much more like a constant metal-on-metal noise than a slap and doesn't seem to go away, only changing tone when the engine revs. Piston slap sounds like a short heavy clunk once/twice per RPM (heavily muted by the engine block obviously). I don't hear that in your video at all.

Not true. VR6 always had 205 wide tyres from day one. This was due to the extra weight and torque over the G60. Though you have a wider choice of tyres in 195 width I would still stick to 205s myself. They aren't a lot more expensive when you're comparing decent brands and as an added bonus they look meaner.. :)

Fitted the third new battery in my ownership of the car today. The old one reached the point where it wouldn't start the car EVEN though it had been on charge for 12 hours and read as "full" ... With the new one on the other hand.. well it's like the car is keen to see me! Press the button on the key fob and it whirrs the locking electrics and flashes the lights like an excited puppy! It was decidedly pathetic about it before .. :) One point to note - every single battery I've bought for this car has not clamped securely. I've had to wedge something under the battery clamp to make it solid. Presumably every battery manufacturer changed the size of the base clamp lip spontaneously around 10 years ago..

Seriously, don't worry about it. It's completely normal and in extreme cold even brand new engines will do this. Just take care of it when it's running this cold and it's going to be fine. Owning a VR Corrado has plenty of other things for you to worry about..

VRs are known for piston slap when old. It's generally nothing to worry about and it goes away when you rev it (because the inertia of the moving piston prevents it slopping about in the bore) and obviously when warm (because, basically, the engine doesn't fit together until it's warm ...). As per Jim's comment, it's something I've been hearing on every VR, ever, and has been mentioned hundreds of times on the forum over the years.

Sounds like an interesting project .. would like to get into that stuff some more myself, but have never had the time.

So how can it be listed for the Corrado VR6 but you had to modify it..!? Presumably an early/late car difference?

(It has to be said I'm only assuming that the 2.0 supports OBD2 connection to vagcom..)

Funny, me too. My master cylinder gets a bit notchy in the hot of summer so it's probably worth me sending off the spare I have for a refurbish, then fit it later. Perhaps it's a trait of Corrado owners that we all have a vast stockpile of spare parts..?

Don't know the 16v engine myself but the easiest way to test the lambda is to read the measuring blocks in vagcom while the engine is running. The temp sensors you need are on the thermostat housing on the VR6, but don't know where they are on the 16V. As before you can also read their raw values from vagcom...

Did you get a VAG-COM scan off it? If you can, get it scanned for faults and check the temperature readouts from the various temp sensors. The engines run on an enrichment program during the first minute after cold start and don't turn the lambda/maf on until afterwards so seems likely there's a fault with one of those.

Looked up pastparts just now. Ancient web site, but sounds like they can do good work. Even when still available from VW the master cylinder was a hell of a lot more than a hundred quid, so if you can get a complete refurb (in stainless steel no less) for a ton that's pretty good.

Watch out for the ebay sellers flogging units that are missing the metal clips that hold it in the dash... The clips fall off as soon as you take the damn thing out but it won't stay put without them.

Might need to run it for a while and let it all dry through...

And you will indeed travel. They do exist but people are quite rightly hanging on to them.

I have heard 6.2 for the corrado before, but find it hard to believe it wasn't somewhat assisted when the factory number is well over a second slower.

It's never been a question of strength, it's all about stability up hills and in wind. It'll pull it, but you'll be struggling to get the grip and you're risking being blown about a bit..
