  1. Mods, hope this is the right place, feel free to move if not! Well, sold 'my' old VR6 in March this year (to one Mr Dilated...hope you are still enjoying it Chris!). Am now driving around in a J reg Volvo 440  Not great. Every time I think of a car I'd like to replace it with, the only one worthy of mention is another VR6!! I bloody knew I'd regret it! Even my 3 year old daughter is encouraging me to buy another (she likes her cars!), keeps telling me how fast it was etc! Oh well, best start saving! Thankfully, I may well be able to sneak it under the girlfriend's radar as we now have a Berlingo for the kids (or 'Bellendo' as the lads at work have christened it!) Cheers, Tim
  2. fair enough.... any idea why the fuel treatment worked for a while? Cheers, Tim
  3. or what VW suggest in the handbook....and certainly not 3 litres in 260 miles!! Tim
  4. Hi Chris, 2.5 to 3 litres in 260 miles just doesn't sound right to me...the car was using about 1 litre (top to bottom of hatch markings) per 1000kms when I owned it, honest! What did help (and I have no idea why) was a fuel treatment, it slowed the consumption right down for a while, but did come back to 1l/1000kms. I did post on this subject when I had the car, might be worth checking? If you really are getting through that amount of oil I'd expect the oil pressure light would be coming on? Would be surpised if there was bore wear, I'd expect rough running if plugs were oiled? Never had that in 14 months and 12k in the car. You seem to observe the same smoking as I did (on giving it a bit of stick - 5k ish). Never any hot starting problems either I would think whipping the head off would give you the best idea of assessing the problem as you say. If you want to discuss anything offline please feel free to ring me, I'll happily go through my experiences if they are of any use to you. Cheers, Tim
  5. Hi Chris, it would appear to be either the starter motor not disengaging quick enough or a belt slipping...I think I stumbled across a similar thread a while back. Sorry I can't be much more help! It always did it in my hands as well! How's it going? I'm still getting used to life post-VR! (Hence me still hanging around on the forum!!). Getting used to the Golf though, good fun when you wind it up a bit!! Cheers, Tim
  6. Hi all, my VR is one of the more thirsty ones re the above....however, since putting in some engine cleaner (via the petrol tank), it appears to have got much better - I've gone 300 miles since the last top up and the level hasn't moved. It would usually have been noticeable by now (although not even half way down the hatch markings) Could it be that the engine was so crudded up before treatment that valves/rings etc weren't sealing properly and oil was being burnt? Any opinions greatfully received!! Cheers, Tim
  7. Aqua blue VR - M***NNE: parked next to you at work today (AZ), left a note under your wipers complimenting your good taste!! Cheers, Tim

    VR6 Problems

Hi Guys, I'm no expert in the field by any means - but aren't dodgy MAF sensors very bad news? Just something I learnt from Impreza website - aftermarket panel filters (oil lined) sometimes end up clogging the MAF (I believe a hot wire type) - this in turn causes fuelling problems leading to detonation and melted pistons!! The TPS may well substitute for the MAF in the VR's case but it sounds like a back up and not ideal. Like I say I'm absolutely no expert and could be well off the mark - anyone else any thoughts? (Kev!!) Cheers, Tim
  9. Blue N reg VR6. We work at the same place in the NW! Saw you driving out of the car park as I was getting into my M reg blue VR6 with a couple of passengers. Cheers, Tim
  10. Hi Guys, any idea how much I should be paying in total (including parts) for the above please? It's for a VR6 by the way :) Cheers, Tim
  11. Hi all, yet again I appear to be taking rather than giving to this forum - I apologise (and must make a donation!). The radiator on my VR has burst, but the car can only go in on Friday - I have no other option but to drive it until then. I'm topping up with antifreeze and water (10%v/v). What is the maximum safe water temp I can run to? The coolant light doesn't seem to come on (is that for level and temp?) and at the moment I have reached a max of about 100C - feels a lot hotter in the cabin cos I have the blowers on full to drag the heat of the engine!!). Oil temp maintained at about 100C, no different to usual. Once the temp gets near 100C I switch the engine of for a couple of minutes. Not sure if the sensor is knacked cos the expansion tank is well under min by the end of the journey. Does this sound ok to you all. Many thanks in advance, Tim
  12. OK, possible nomination for idiot of the year here.... my VR burst its radiator over the weekend - booked in for Friday, but still needs to be used every day. I'm keeping on top of the levels (so no coolant warning light etc). However, decided to add some more antifreeze tonight (10%v/v with water) - it is Mobil advanced stuff...recommended for VW with code TL774D - looked in handbook and the code for the C is TL774B. I'm hoping that B is G11 and D is a G12 + type coolant (so no gelling). The Mobil stuff is pink if that helps. Can anyone confirm? Any help much appreciated! Cheers, Tim
