Grounding strap near ECU

Recommended Posts

just noticed that there's a loose strap (looks like a grounding strap) near the ECU that's only connected at one end (to the engine side bulkhead).

Where should the other end go???

I had to replace mine once... there should probably be a bit of rusted metal on the bonnet hinge (as dazzy said) where it used to go... just undid one nut on mine, and put the replacement on without any problems.

Think it did cost about £10 for a new one though.. bloody stealers.

You don't need that strap, all it is does is earth out the bonnet to neutral so that engine electrical interference is contained within the bonnet as part of the UK electrical noise emission regulations. In other words, that strap stops people's TVs and radios going fuzzy when you drive past.

Pull the strap off, it servers no other purpose (ECU has many grounds) and is not an MOT requirement.
