Son of a Beesting 0 Posted December 1, 2004 Hello I am about to change my gearbox fluid and while I am there I am thinking of Waxoiling the underside of my car. Has anyone done this, I cant find it for sale anywhere. Where can I get it from? I have heard it comes in aerosol can or in a tin to paint on. Which one is better? Any help would be gratefully received
corradophil 3 Posted December 1, 2004 You can buy it at Halfords in Aerosol or with a pump which screws into a 1 or 2 litre tin. I wouldn't reccomend painting it on. Far better to spray it. Its a Very messy job.
Henny 0 Posted December 1, 2004 pump is MUCH better to use and much cheaper in the long run... 8)
craigowl 0 Posted December 1, 2004 NB - Brown Waxoyl is for inside panels not exposed to abrasion by road grit and water. They do a black underseal-type for the bottom of the car, which is not so easily flushed off. Some old-school twerps Waxoyl their cars every year. I used to be one of them. We'll all probably have premature deaths due to the toxins in the stuff. Boy, is it messy! http://www.forensicmet.co.uk
Son of a Beesting 0 Posted December 2, 2004 Ok thanks for all of the advice, looks like a trip to Halfrauds it is then!! This maybe a stupid question but because there has not been oil leaks under the car it is a bit rusty, even the sump is succumbing!! Will I need to do something about the rust first? I know I will need to get at it with a wire brush to take the flaky rust off but is the Waxoil a rust remedy or should I put some sort of rust remedy on first? Thanks again
corradophil 3 Posted December 2, 2004 Clean the rusty areas up with a wire brush, then spray the areas with stone chip protection paint. Don't use underseal, which is like tar, because it is known to lift from the body allowing moisture to become trapped against the metal surface. Following these localised repairs, clean the rest of the underside as much as possible and then cover it in waxoil. Try to avoid the exhaust and brakes though. I am supprised its rusty, VW took a lot of care to seal them. Good luck, you will get very dirty, and as Henny said, buy a pump rather than aerosol if you going to do a large area.
