G60 or VR6

Recommended Posts

If you're not expecting a monumental leap forward in peformance, the move to a VR6 from a G60 isn't a bad one.

The only cons worthy of note are fuel consumption and the cost of changing the timing chains. Tired & neglected ones are probably in need of bore and head work if they're smoking.

Get a good one and it's a great car..... get a bad one and you'll be spending lots of time and money on it!

Full VWSH means nothing, unless the dealer in question were exceptional.

All it means is the car was serviced at a dealer and is no reflection on the quality of workmanship or care and attention paid to it.

It's just a shame that cars without VWSH have such a bad stigma attached to them, but the reality is, cars serviced at independants or VW specialists/tuners usually recieve a much higher standard of workmanship and knowledge.

Very true. Mine used to be serviced at VW, now I have it done on the road I live on! It's just a local garage, but the mechanic owns a corrado too and loves my car, so it gets the attention it deserves! I doubt I would get that kind of service at my local VW garage.

VR6 insurance is group 18, out of interest what is G60's? The same?

Pro for G60, cheaper to tune, and looks so good in its original state on BBS', plus inca blue was an awesome colour!

Pro for VR6: naturally aspirated and if timing chains have been done and engine in a good state, then should go for many many miles. Also the sound of 6 cylinders.... hhhhhmmmmmmmm that sold me!!!

No cons, I love them both, both great cars in their own right!!! 8)

G60 is grp 17 insurance, iirc, so marginally cheaper. Many big insurers have a cut-off at 17 though, and will offer silly prices for 18+ cars.

You're telling me, at the last service it will ever have at a VW garage they lost 2 cylinders from the car  they thought it was a 16v. And even got the registration wrong, even though it is written in large font on both the front and rear of the car

To be fair the registration bit was probably a typo, they put a H instead of a G. It makes me wonder though...

Chains normally get changed at the 100k service, although some last a lot longer. They will start rattling when they need to be changed and it is a very costly job- about a grand

What does the chain rattle sound like? Any sound clips of it? Mines done 127k and I don't know if the chains have been changed.....it's got FVWSH but I can't see any mention of them in any of the service receipts.

delcfc, I hope you got in there and bought that mint G60 that was advertised and sold today. In the family from new with 69k on the clock and in black with the original bbs'. I would have snapped it up if I was looking!!! Well within budget too at £3.5k. If not then how are you getting on? Have you decided: VR or G60 yet?

hmmmmmmm.......i'm sorry but the chains aren't really a service item...........and according to a head VW-tech and also a well respected VW specialist that i trust with my motor they are meant to last the lifetime of the car.................

Meant to, but don't as we know! Funny how the upper tensioner has been modified 5 times by VW and they consider it a 'fit and forget' item!

Has anyone here actually had a tensioner fail on them??

There are many high miler VR6's on here - have they all had their tensioners replaced?

I know a chap who had a VR that he had from new (started as his company car) and he had clocked 230+k on the clock and didn't know what I meant when I spoke of changing tensioners. His was a K plate '93 model.

The chains don't break, except in VERY rare circumstances. I've heard of a few going, but that's not bad considering the number of VR6 engines out there with, like you say, starship miles on them.

The tensioners don't "fail" either, unless you call wearing through the rivets and losing the tensioning pad as failure. The chain guides on the non-tensioned side have been known to snap though. You can drive the car on sloppy chains, no question, but there's been a few that skip teeth when the chains go slack, and that can be a whole host of pain to deal with. Best to replace the tensioners if nothing else, and let's face it, due to VW not thinking the job would *ever* have to be done, they didn't exactly make it easy, so by the time you've got the tensioner off, you may aswell replace the whole lot..

Yes. The chain was through the pad and was starting to dig a groove into the rivets that hold the pad in place when it was removed.

It had been clattering for some time, probably at least a year, when it was done.
