PeterMunns 0 Posted December 24, 2004 Got my 16v.....and a stainless steel exhuast mainfold. Also so got some spare time over christmas / new year. How hard is it to fit ....seems like quite a small gap between engine and bulkhead. What should i do....?? Or should i just pay some one ...but people want around £100....Argh
bcstudent 0 Posted December 24, 2004 I found that it wasn't as much of a nightmare as the Mk.2 8v I had previously. I guess it all depends how mechanically competant you are and how brave you're feeling!
aide 0 Posted December 24, 2004 This is not easy, but if your prepared then go for it. Having said that £100 seems fair ish given the hassle it *can* cause! Your right there isn't much room to feed the 4 branch in (assuming it's an all in one jobby?), biggest hassle is removing the old manifold and down pipe - make sure you have spare nuts and the studs because you'll definitely strip some.... be prepared to give em a good soak first too. You'll have to jack the motor to get access from underneath too, and the inlet manifold coming off makes it easier. You might want to consider wrapping the manifold, it removes the tinniness, some pro's say you MUST, others say you MUST NOT wrap..... mine isn't wrappped, but will be soon :D I found the actual fitting a doddle, it was the removal that was a killer... if you want to do the job properly you'll also have to mod the warm air pickup plate to the air box. Feel free to PM me and i'll forward my mobile, tonnes easier than going through it on here :D
PeterMunns 0 Posted December 24, 2004 aide, Thanks for the advice will properly do it myself now. As i know the Old mainfold to down pipe studs shouldn't be to much of a nightmare as i had to tackle these when i changed the engine in the summer. Bit worried about the studs in the head thou.... :? Where did you get ur new studs from...vw Cheers Peter
immensewarrior 0 Posted December 24, 2004 Dealers tried to charge me £47 for the exhaust gaskets, studs and copper nuts. I ran away. Take one of the old studs to a fixings place or an exhaust centre They may even give you them for free Lee
flusted 0 Posted December 24, 2004 You have to lower the front subframe to allow cleareance to get old 1 out . Big job

flusted 0 Posted December 27, 2004 Yep,had to drop the subframe, tried everything first then just bit the bullet. I think i undone the downpipe first and then the manifold, then subframe. You only need to undo the 4 subframe bolts, and let it hang on the struts

Shes blowing at the bottom where the mainfold joins the mid box. aide 0 Posted January 4, 2005 nice one, did you wrap it or not?
PeterMunns 0 Posted January 4, 2005 aide, Yep its wrapped up that wrap isn't cheap...!! Cost me £20 for 5 meters which isn't enough...i mean long enough. It keeps on smelling think all the oil is slowly burning of the wrap as it was a bit dirty. But it does make quite a big differnce to the power and noise Sounds very beefy Can't think what it would be like with out the wrap

aide 0 Posted January 6, 2005 Can't think what it would be like with out the wrap sounds quite tinny without the wrap, i'll be wrapping mine once i've got new engine in, am hoping the wrap will dampen vibrations between the down pipe and front silencer :D
PeterMunns 0 Posted January 6, 2005 aide, New engine.....?? What you putting in....?? Think those vibrations are mostly caused buy the nuckle join gasget..
aide 0 Posted January 6, 2005 it's a 2 litre 9a block with custom throttle body and inlet manifold, polished inlet tract and cylinder head, modded inlet cam with vernier, vsam and possibly 5th injector (possibly NOS too) .... i'm going old skool...until i save up for the turbo hope for some decent power in conjunction with other mods
PeterMunns 0 Posted January 6, 2005 aide, Sweet..!! I ve put a 2L 9a block in with piper cams, piper cross air filter lol, Now the stainless mainfold. And i ve had a Plate made up for 2.5bmw throttle body going on .....not on yet thou...will be soon!!! So is the 5th injector just for NOS or is it a good normal mod...??
