Storm 0 Posted January 9, 2005 Any one done one? know what fails and the likely cost of parts? :-P
stevemac 0 Posted January 9, 2005 My knowledge of gearbox intenals is fairly minimal but you'll need at least 1st & 2nd synchro, possibly reverse, full gasket set, gear selectors (depending on condition) & I'd also replace whatever bearings are in there too. Henny 0 Posted January 10, 2005 Have a word with Vince down at Stealth. He's the Guru on VAG boxes and charges about £500 for a full rebuild... 8) It's difficult to do a box at home due to some of the specialised tools you need to get it apart/back together again... Gearboxes are about the only bit on a car I won't strip apart and try to fix 'cos they scare me... :|
PhatVR6 0 Posted January 10, 2005 I downloaded the official VAG manual for the 02A. had a flick through it, then took my gearbox to stealth............ you need several grands worth of special VAG tools to press most of the bearings and seals in and out, not to mention special gear to measure the pre loading of the diff bearings. Save your sanity, pay a pro tp do it, Vince is tha main man.

Storm 0 Posted January 10, 2005 Cheers fella's. I dont need a rebuild at the moment, just felt like doing one to see if I could do it. If I come across a knackered gearbox I might still strip it down to have a look though. A mate works for a VAG dealer and may come in handy. Paul, have you still got the link where I can download the manual? Thanks. Rik. :-P
