dinkus 10 Posted August 9, 2005 I bought a red-illuminated one a few weeks ago and yes, it is top-notch service and the knob is very good quality too. I haven't wired it in yet tho, as I want to do all the switches and gauges at the same time.
Jim 2 Posted August 9, 2005 Well the instructions make it look easy with regards to wiring on the MK4 as you just tap into the ash tray power supply.. I guess it'll all become clear when I take it apart and examine how it currently it and how it looks in the instructions ;) A mate at work (with the anniversary MK4) kinda joked when I said I was buying an illuminated gearknob - but took the box with me to work today and he was like "Oh.. nice.. i'd actually quite like sommat like that" ;)
dinkus 10 Posted August 9, 2005 Heh heh, yeah everyone I've told about it has said "hmm, that sounds a bit chav" then they actually see it in the car and go "oh, it's quite nice!"
MikeVR6 0 Posted August 9, 2005 Heh heh, yeah everyone I've told about it has said "hmm, that sounds a bit chav" then they actually see it in the car and go "oh, it's quite nice!" No way! As if I'd bother with anything but tasteful OE look mods! :)
dinkus 10 Posted August 9, 2005 Well exactly...! :D When I get the DDI gauges and tach rings in the dash, then the knob will match perfectly and it'll look even more OE 8)
Jim 2 Posted August 9, 2005 Hm.. went to go and have a go at this over lunch but no connector blocks or anything kinda ended that one before it started.. that and not having any snips strong enough to cut through the brass ring holding the OE gearknob in place. Again, please humour me because of my newness to all of this but cutting the current feed to the cigarette lighter and tapping in to it to power this.. is there any way I could possibly electricute myself, and do I have to disconnect the battery or can I do it all in situ? I just dont ever do auto electrics and i'm sure those who know what they are doing are all laughing at me now but.. c'mon.. newbie.. cut me some slack. Shilakadaddy 0 Posted August 9, 2005 You shouldn't need to disconnect the battery, just cut away! Try not to touch earth (the car body) with the live, and things should be fine :)
Jim 2 Posted August 9, 2005 Ok.. well i'm pretty sure i'll be able to do this now I know I won't cook myself :) Tough being a newbie..
Jim 2 Posted August 11, 2005 Voila :) Lights up too obviously but its not bright enough to be able to see it properly in daylight.. should look peachy at night though! Definately looks nice and OE!
Shilakadaddy 0 Posted August 11, 2005 Very nice 8) I'll have to get one of these when I've got some spare cash... Glad to see you didn't electricute yourself either... I would have felt a bit responsible if you had
Jim 2 Posted August 11, 2005 Well i've done what might be considered a bodge but I just didn't fancy cutting cables.. so i just stripped back the plastic on the power cables another few mm or so for the gearknob and tapped it into the back of the connector block for the ash tray (which seemed to grip them very well) and wrapped up with a little electrical tape. Yes, possible bodge, but seems quite secure and is reversible. All the proper electricians are gonna come and nail me now i'm sure.
DEL VR6 0 Posted August 17, 2005 I fitted mine yesterday. took a few minutes figuring out how best to get the wire to the ciggy lighter, but after that, was straight forward. This is one of my favorite mods. Its got a nice feel to it too when changing gear.
