chrishill 0 Posted February 25, 2005 I think my water pumps on its last legs, over the last few weeks its gone from total scilence, to the odd 'twitter' and finally to wailing like a banshee. I've looked up prices for a new pump of GSF and euro car part, both about £25, but I'll have to take it to a grage to get it fitted. any ideas how much labour i'd pay on something like this? Henny 0 Posted February 25, 2005 It should be around 2 hours to do the waterpump on a valver at a garage... Don't forget to put on a new drive belt, PAS belt and get some G12+ coolant too while you're doing it (if the belts haven't been changed recently) as there's no point putting old ones back on again... ;) Make sure you get the FULL waterpump, not just the impellor, as the housing wears on 'em too and the full pump is only a couple of quid more expensive... 8)
chrishill 0 Posted February 25, 2005 not as bad as i thought then, better buy some bits!
biggrim 0 Posted February 25, 2005 Slightly off topic but not quite here, sorry Chris. Could someone possibly look up ETKA for the part numbers for a waterpump, stat, and housing for a 92 G60 please? need to get mine fixed soon and a mate of mine owes me a favour at the stealer so should get the bits at trade. Cheers
Henny 0 Posted February 25, 2005 exactly the same parts as for the Valver Grim... ;) Get the bits from GSF or Euro, they'll probably work out cheaper than VAG's trade price...
Del G60 0 Posted February 27, 2005 not the end of the world to change the pump yourself,if you know your way round the engine, pump and belts, coolant should come to no more than £35 the only thing I always buy if I am doing belts in original V.W ones just to be double safe :)
Chris VR6nos 0 Posted February 27, 2005 Well Chris you only have to ask and i'll replace the water pump and belt for you. Just get the parts Chris
biggrim 0 Posted March 2, 2005 Just back from Euro and got water pump, thermostat housing, thermostat, water pump seal, timing belt, timing belt tensioner and some V.A.T for £55.01. Forgot to get some G12+ though. Should I replace the power steering belt too at the same time? Hopefully this will sort my car out, fingers crossed tho. Is it something that I could do with my Halfords Professional 150 piece tool kit or do I need specialist tools. Obviously, the buggered knuckles and ample swearing will be needed but anything else? My biggest engine related job to date was replacing the alternator a few weeks back. Am I better getting a reputable garage like Star Performance do it for me? Rossco 0 Posted March 2, 2005 Its a lot more in depth than a valver but is quite do-able, ye have to take off the charger and the charger bracket, once thats off then you will easily see how it comes off, 3 rubber hose pipes and 4 big bolts and it will fall off. great fun like
Rpmayne 0 Posted March 2, 2005 Good fun with a VR aswell, only way I could see wasto undo the front and LHS engine mounts, jack the engine up on that side then use abit of wood to push the engine to the right just to get clearance to remove it. Anyone find a better way of doing that? Not alot of space to do things really.
biggrim 0 Posted March 2, 2005 Alternator has to come off too but that's easy enough. Just hope I can do it in a day. Need to invest in some axle stands methinks. Is the timing belt and tensioner easy enough to do?
Henny 0 Posted March 3, 2005 biggrim, you don't need to get under the car all that much... I've done it before from above when I didn't have any axle stands available... You should be able to get it done in a full day even if you've not done one before... I did the last one on J-DUB in about 3 hours from engine switch off to engine re-start... 8)
