Jim 2 Posted April 10, 2005 Well now that the Corrado has gone, i'm hunting around for a new motor. I've got a few ideas about what i'd like in this price range, but really not too sure. I want something thats not going to require lots and lots of maintainence, and something still with a bit of a punch. And something preferably a little cheaper to insure than my G60 :) Currently really considering something like a well loved MK3 Golf GTI like a colour concept or aniversary edition or similar. I have been thinking about a Golf VR6 but insurance looks pretty hairy on them being group 16.. and I guess it won't be that much more economical than my G60 was! Definately leaning towards something from the VAG stable so I can continue to give Stealth Racing my custom.. they are a trust worthy and reasonably local specialist garage which seems to be a hard thing to find these days! moneypit23 0 Posted April 10, 2005 I'd personally go for a Lupo, a diesel Lupo but they have a habbit of making men look like an actionman doll in a rollerskate... GTi's are still rare and pricey too.
Jim 2 Posted April 10, 2005 Problem is i'm well over 6ft tall and look a bit silly in small cars.. so kinda thinking I might look a bit odd in a Lupo :)
VR6 0 Posted April 10, 2005 Tough one to call really Jim. I think as others have said, you might find that the Mk3 just doesn't quite hit the spot. That make sense? I think they would certainly make a nice car, but I would only really go for a VR Highline so as to get the leather +possibly aircon and you also get a bit of oomph with them. Being a ind of special edition, as such, they should also hold their values rather well. You not tempted to add a bit more to the kitty and get a nice C VR or Storm? Or is it a time for pastures new? Guest Posted April 10, 2005 Before you laugh - try a Primera GT - I ran two, first to 100k, second to 60k, great engine, only 150bhp but revs round to 7500 and enough performance to keep a 16V Mk3 GTi honest, superb build quality, handling was superb, practical, totally reliable and unbelievably cheap to run, considering picking amother one up myself to keep the Corrados mileage down . Only negative was the image but others peoples loss was my gain as thats what makes them so cheap to buy Oh, good equipment too - aircon, 1/2 leather, ABS, remote locking, CD etc etc

I honestly think i've got the Corrado thing out of my system for now! Before you laugh - try a Primera GT Hm.. they look pretty nice but if you hit Autotrader there seems to be a distinct shortage of them for sale! moneypit23 0 Posted April 10, 2005 V5 Bora? A few subtle mods is all it takes
CaiosG60 PWR 0 Posted April 10, 2005 Jim, Just a bit over your price range would get an early mk4 1.8T 150bhp. Think they start at £5000 for a 5 door with about 100K. Insurance group 15 and apparently quite economical before there chipped. I've been keeping an eye on them! Fancy one myself soon maybe!
Guest Posted April 10, 2005 Drove a neighbours 180bhp 1.8T running on 18" rims a couple of weeks ago, must be the most boring car I have driven in years, fat in a straight line and top build quality but personally wouldn't touch one if you enjoy driving

CazzaVR 0 Posted April 10, 2005 Was going to suggets an Ibiza Cupra too. Look good in black- didn't they do a 16v too? Other than that Civic VTI's are pretty good. Most people prefer the 1.6, but I liked the 1.8 better (same engine as Integra GSR) as it was quite torquey (for a Honda). You know that nothing will go wrong either- stress-free driving, unlike a certain other car I could mention  Pirate's Black is also my fav car colour 8) Nice £5K VTI-S at a Honda dealer in Wolverhampton  Check out Autotrader. chrishill 0 Posted April 10, 2005 subtly modded bora's look nice, but they're pretty dull to drive. I had one on loan while my c was in for a service and it didnt really inspire me. how about a passat 1.8T?
ZippyVR6 0 Posted April 10, 2005 How about a Pug 306 GTI6 ? Serioudly rapid. doesnt shout about it to much and as long as it is kept clean or not to modded an air of respectability.
chubbybrown 0 Posted April 10, 2005 How much of a golf TDI can you get for 5k ? nice motor, cheap to run and a Tdi :-)
CaiosG60 PWR 0 Posted April 10, 2005 I think you can get a Golf TDi for under 5k, but if it was me I'd want the GT TDi (150bhp with room for more 8) ) and those still cost quite a bit. :-( If you could get a GT TDi for under £5000 I'd already have one! Good looks and performance but with diesel economy. Perfect for conniving yourself your being very sensible! Until the remap, etc becomes just too tempting.
G-Lader 0 Posted April 10, 2005 I was thinking of an A3 tdi before the mk2 came up, wanted a car that was gonna do a few mpg and be cheap to run. Take the badges off and get some Audi 17's or 18's, would look sweet imo
CaiosG60 PWR 0 Posted April 10, 2005 **Runs off to Autotrader website to look at A3 tdi's!!

samm_cvr6 0 Posted April 10, 2005 you could get an Ibiza 1.8t and get it up to 220+bhp. Or before I got my VR, I looked at a nice S14a for 4k and that is really nice, infact there are times, although not often when I wish I bought it. 260bhp is no probs. samm_cvr6 0 Posted April 10, 2005 suprised nobody has mentioned the 20v Coupe Turbo- but I for one would be concerned about that much power through the front wheels and of course build quality is a bit suspect.
g60_Pete 0 Posted April 10, 2005 you'll probably all lynh me for saying it, but a fiat coupe. they look the dogs go like hell and there's alot of engine options. high insuracne group though.. but kinda worth it, you see even less coupes than rado's! they did. 2.0 16v, and 16v turbo, then later 2.0 20v and 20v turbo (the latter coming with LSD as standard) the slowest model was obviously the normally aspirated 16v pushing out 147bhp, the 20v making around 150, 16v turbo punchin out 190+bhp and the 20v turbo 220bhp. the model to look for was the 20v turbo plus, had a nice factor fitted bodykit nicer wheels and better colours. i was gonna buy one before i got my g60 :D i think the 20v turbo will be my next victim when im about 25 :D
