damn my oil cooler!!

Recommended Posts

I fited my oil cooler today and saw an huge temp drop, from 120C i used to get on hard driving now it never goes above 96C even when in traffic, and my coolant seems to stay at 70C,i think this is a bit to low :? ,oil seems ok,on motorway driving oil tepms stay at 87C. Im using a 13 row mocal cooler. Now i can thrash it withour looking at my oil temp :p every second. If temps stay this low i might consider changin the location where it will get less air so it wont cool that much.

got the cooler from burrton power for £58 including hoses and bends, that is a 13 row cooler. the sandwich plate i got from demon tweeks for £15 (its not a thermo switch plate that costs £30). All in all it cost me about £90,not bad considering the change in temps.

Nice one. I've had my Mocal 13 row on for a couple of months now and it gives the same results, which in the VR6 is a good thing. It won't undercool since the thermostat in the sandwich plate only triggers at 70 or 80 degrees, depending on what you ordered.

In the winter, you can always block it if it undercools but I've had Mocals on other cars and have never needed to do that.

Cheers

Oil cooling is one of the best mods to any of the Corrado engines particularly the G60 and VR6. I have been supplying dedicated kits for some time now and they include stainless braided hoses, thermostat sandwich plates and 19 row cooler rad. This package works extremely well and i would recomend all Corrado owners to make this mod.

Has anyone got any pictures of the fitment of these oil coolers, and is it an easy mod? Don't like the idea of using self tapping screws through good metal etc.

As the oil temperature stays lower, would this reduce the amount being burnt because it gets too thin? A mate drove behind me on a long trip and noticed grey smoke when changing gear and the occasional blue puff when hard accelerating. Its been compression tested etc and all clear, quite wishfully thinking that the problem is thin oil getting round the valve stem seals.

16VG60

How much is your kit? and are they easy to fit? do you use the original cooler out let? would you need a cooler for a standard power VR6, is the OE one not that good.

Cheers.

I'm still scratching my head on the best place to put it, I got told in front of the radiator, but I'm still not sure. Some pics would be well help full.

I got the kit from TSR for about £145.

I've got the same problem - just had it checked by specialist and he reckons seals/guide problem so the head needs to come off - not one to do it by halves am going to source a flowed and ported recon head....

Thanks for your interest in further info ref my oil cooler kits. I sell these for £135 plus p&p. As regards their use, as mentioned previously i would strongly recomend that all G60 and VR6 owners fit this kit, being as both these cars produce significantly high oil temps which can be detrimental to perfomance. I'm sure you have all at one time or another opened your bonnet after a journey, and been hit by the heat wave that leaps out of the bay at you. Simply cooling the oil can help dramaticly to reduce this. There are are other mods but this is the more important one.

Macca, you ask if my kit uses the oe oil cooler outlet. By this i assume you mean the filter head? My kit uses a thermostat sandwich plate to replace the oe oil cooler, in turn the sandwich plate provides pipe unions for the new cooler.

Darren has kindly shown pictures of one possible location for the cooler rad, this idea came as a direct result of my 16VG60 developement wherein the oe intercooler had been removed to make way for my Audi RS2 item. Clearly this location will not suit you all but my kits are supplied with a choice of two pipe lengths accomodating two possible locations for the cooler.

Oil cooling sadly is not the answer to stopping oil being burnt due to stem seal / valve guide wear. Yes, cooler oil has greater viscosity but not to this extent. If your engine has this problem the only cure is good old maintenance, or the short term fix might be to use higher viscosity semi-synthetic oil but we are only talking very short term if at all. Regarding any head work, be it oe part repairs or porting modifications, i would be happy to quote for any such works.

Is it possible to fit the oil cooler on the opposite side to the intercooler, under the supercharger?? :?

I've found the best place to fit it is in front of the radiator, on the VR6 at least. Space is very tight but it's do-able in an afternoon.

Mine dropped from 114 deg @ 80mph to 96 deg.

Rack, the location i prefer for fitting oil cooler to the standard G60 engine is onto the crossmember under the supercharger. You will need to open up the air way from the lower bumper grille. I supply my kits with pipework to suit this location or as previously stated. The cooler rad will need anti vibration mounts on the lower fixings and a steadying strap at the top. Please comtact me if i can be of further assistance.
