Riley 0 Posted July 9, 2005 the temp got to 110 on the gauge today,i pulled over straight away and popped the bonnet. the fan wasnt turning which i thought was strange, but as soon as i knocked off the ignition it came on,im guessing it should do? anyway, the top hoses and heater were seriously hot,but feeling down the side of the rad it was cold (where fan switch is) the bottom hose was cold to. so thats the reason the fan probably wasnt running,i got it home carefully and tried to get the bottom hose etc hot but it wont :( i fitted a new water pump a while ago and it seems to be pumping it round everywhere except the bottom hose. whats the problem guys? :( also  while having it running trying to get it hot,the charger was making knocking noises very intermittently, wtf is going on there? neil. :(
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted July 9, 2005 Sounds like a stat problem. Bottom hose is the output from the water pump and top hose goes to the head....so if the bottom hose is cold, the stat isn't opening....but 110 isn't drastic... Henny, correct me mate if I'm wrong ...I've had too many beers!
Riley 0 Posted July 9, 2005 cheers kev,i didnt replace the thermostat at the time of water pump change as they didnt have one in stock. is the thermostat easy enough to change? and any idea on the knocking charger? :( cheers, neil.
g60_Pete 0 Posted July 9, 2005 my charger does the same, some guy i know says it might be a plate? think he's talking a load of fluff and mines just worn and in need of tlc.
Riley 0 Posted July 9, 2005 yours does it too then :( its like a loud knock, and you can feel it on the charger casing when it does it! it was rebuilt to stage 2 at jabba around 11-12k ago. i really dont know enough about g60's
g60_Pete 0 Posted July 9, 2005 yeah, my alternator made the same noise as the central shaft was bent. sound the same only i replaced my alt and the knock is still there. it is intermittent i think though. my charger needs servicing soon though. tis still standard too
Riley 0 Posted July 9, 2005 yeah sounding like it m8,its strange because mine seems to still push 14 psi with a 70mm pulley :? well,it reads 2000 on the mfa which is 14psi i think...
Blown 0 Posted July 9, 2005 Riley, take the small back cover off the charger and check the small toothed belt for tension/wear. If the belt is slack or worn,it could mean that the shaft is moving inside its bearing. Might be that.Someone will probably point out something far simpler.... Also check that the mounting bolts on the bar underneath the charger are tight and that the cast alloy bracket isn't cracked. Riley 0 Posted July 9, 2005 thanks blown,it had a new belt on when i changed the water pump as it snapped just as i turned off the engine! this was a few months ago now,i did check it was still there a bit back and it is thank god! i dont get how the knock can be so intermittent and it still produces good boost,or so i think? cheers, neil. Sorry mate, I know precisely dick about G laders.....but from memory working on Supercharged's G60, you have to take a the PAS bracketry off to get at the thermostat housing....and I *think* some of the Glader bits too....a bit of a chore in other words! potatonet 0 Posted July 11, 2005 ok I know my charger does the same thing, or at least I think its the charger, I'm worried about it though, gonna have it rebuilt by Kompressor Kanada to stage IV spec, wish they had a stage V tho... hopefully they will put in a remanufactured main shaft into the charger if that knocking noise is the charger... thermostats... here this is what I have... http://www.bahnbrenner.com/media/php/ca ... 6&catid=83 get the fan switch as an option... stays about 177F all the time. =-)
billinjah 0 Posted July 11, 2005 the overrun fan sensor is different to the sensor that runs the fan when the car is running id stick another thermo switch in the rad ive got one that operates the fan at a lower temp seems to keep the temps down not sure of the part number somebody on here might know though. gradeAfailure 0 Posted July 11, 2005 http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/vw%20golfmk2/engine.html I know the link says it's for the MK2 Golf, but scroll to the bottom and you'll see the Neuspeed stuff, and it'll fit all 4-cyl VWs witht a 3-pole fan switch... Got the stat on mine, and 80deg coolant temp at motorway speeds is very nice indeed!
