Coilovers at standard height ???

Thinking of improving my VR handling(10 years old). The Insureance wont touch it if its raised ? or lowered.

 

Question is, will it be worth fitting coil overs or go for a uprated standard height system, if there is one. Some of the roads I use are crap and lowering is not an issue, would rather keep it standard looking with improved road holding.

 

 

Any Ideas on kits available and price?

I would just change the shocks and bushes to be honest in your situation... just go for some high quality shock absorbers and replace the top mounts, etc at same time - will make a big difference to the handling and you wont need to tell the insurance either.

The purpose of coilovers in my mind is so you can crank the height up and down for track days, racing tires etc, so I agree you would be better off fitting some good quality shocks like Bilstein sport (HD might be too stiff) and refreshing the bushings, ball joints, wheel bearings etc if they need attention.

the cops use uprated sprngs on their cars. they are a rally type spring, think gravel and are same as std ride height but stiffer

i work at a garage..we get a few cars in that have been lowered and not declared on the ins...as long as you dont go mad i.e drop it 25-40mm max then you wont get any trouble

in theory they can kick up if your car has a pin stripe etc,dont worry as long as your sensible

they tend to look at nova boys with 5" exhausts and stupid mods

I work for an insurance company and if the claims assessor notices undeclared non-standard items fitted, the policy could be voided. If you claim the parts were on the car when you bought it and didn't know any different, they may come to an agreement. However, if the bonnet is lifted and a dirty great supercharger can be seen, then no way, but orange or red springs and yellow dampers, well, you may be OK.

If i went for the coilovers the insures want an independant engineers report to say its still stock height. The policy is a classic one at £273 fully comp for 6K miles a year, which is a lot cheaper than others I got quotes from.

 

Think I will go for some stock height, uprated handling if possible.
