Hello from the Dutch Motorway / Apres Karmann!!

Recommended Posts

Well we did get the chance to buy a load of Scirocco and Corrado memorabilia which the Karmann shop had long since discontinued..

Hopefully Supercharged will be sorting out some keyrings soon that he bought a few of - I bought one of them, nice metal Corrado side view with Karmann stamped on the back :)

Yep, given one (Corrado Keyring), they popped out of the VR6 boot very nicely in 1999.

@Jim: Some minutes at the meeting I was in a condition to read some urls, so it was a good idea to have some advertise on the corrados (I think it was 2cc's).

@Tempest: Oh yeah, I wasn't really able to drive that day. What a luck Dirk went earlier to bed, otherwise I could be still in Osnarbrück :D . It's like a mysterious circle, cold beer, good weather, headache the next day, so you need some medicine (cold beer), oh, the weather is fine, headache again, medicine again, [...]

Dirk drove carefully, anyway he couldn't drive hard, as my clutch is slipping. It's seem to be time for the next upgrade in my tdi.

I hope I'll be able to visit the UK again, but I think the next two years it will not be possible, as I'm still doing chip-working/club-working/normal-working/study.

Which I somehow received as a present, great stuff, Jim, thanks again :-) That keyring has, however, wandered into my carefully treasured box of Type 53 goodies, that I normally only take to shows, as I felt it would sustain too much damage in the long run when left together with my Rado-keys.

Jim, did I get the impression, that you only hesitantly handed back my Rado-keys last Monday, when I dropped you off home?

@ Chris:

You lucky man. We had to pay for the stuff, as the story is as follows: The top guys at Karmann wanted a clear-out of all the what they viewed as trash in the basement below the private car collection. They simply chucked it away  One guy got hold of all these items, and was now flogging them at the Karmann meet, for what I felt some tidy profit.

@ Zoran:

What as many as a few minutes?

as my clutch is slipping

Good luck fixing that, as you'll need it in good working condition again by the 8/10/2005, when you're off to another rolling road day ("P*nis size competition", as someone just called it over the phone ), according to Dirk :-)

but I think the next two years it will not be possible

Shame, as there's quite a bit going on here in the VW and Corrado-scene as well.

Well, at least I'm not the only one longing back to last week at Karmann, when at this time I had just finished the translation of the guided tour at Karmann, and we were about to clog up a roundabout in Osnabrück on the way to the camp site, due to the incompetence of a certain US-spec white G60 Corradodriver ... Jim !!! Can't remember who was driving

Bugger, I guess that must have been Saturday night, then? Missed out on that.

I think Supercharged has already posted a piccy showing the lack of battery in the VR engine bay - obviously the production line was a bit short at some point!

Sean - good to see you, man! Have you checked out the Mk1 Storm on ebay? Could do with a bit of work to get it up to your standard, but not bad. I love the fact that there's a brick as a chock on what looks like a very level piece of ground!

The cheek.. as I remeber it was you who got lost on the roundabout! :)

Considering it was my first time driving a LHD motor AND my first time driving on the other side of the road, I think my driving was exemplary :D

Er Jim it should be easier driving a left hand drive car on the wrong, ahem, side of the road

Only kidding, Jim, as indicated by all those smilies. Yes, indeed, Jim did an admirable job of driving a LHD Rado on the "other" side of the road, but he also did a good job of actually driving the more challenging RHD, 2cc's Rado, in Germany.

Tempest have you started to translate the 30 page document on the Corrados creation you mentioned just beofre you left? *drools*

Yes, that was done live to a captive audience whilst at the meet. You weren't there, I seem to remember

Oh yes, before I forget, greetings from those Rado folks that we briefly met up with in Nordhorn, amongst others the chap with his 2 Liter 8V Rado, and of course those lovely ladies that took 2cc's Rado for a good spin. I'll leave it at that ...

I think I can speak for Eric in saying that he won't be translating that document.. not only would it be a gargantuan task to get it right, we're not actually meant to HAVE that document. It'd be like dishing out copies of ETKA on here, again, something we can't really do!

We've plucked certain highlights from the document though (nothing that the right people didn't already know BTW) and included them in the Corrado history document we are compiling.

On the subject of driving.. well I actually drove Erics LHD car down to Harwich (so LHD on the left hand side) and then drove 2cc's RHD on the right hand side a bit before actually driving Erics car on the side of the road it was designed for. Regardless of whether it was actually the right car for the right side of the road, it was still bloody confusing having the gearknob on the other side and having to go right at roundabouts, etc!! :)

In the mean time, heres a nice close up of the keyring I was on about :)

Only kidding Jim but all that swapping between countries and LHD and RHD cars would be confusing (And yes I enjoy driving Chris's VR too - when he lets me)

Nice keyring but what are the wheels? (Being anal now!)

As I explained to Jim, even that you get used to, as I do it regularly :-)

Martin (from a German Scirocco Forum) owned this really nice MK2 Rocco.. was rather keen on it, I gotta say! :)

And his Rocco wasn't even wearing the mentally wide alloys :-), which he had on, when he picked me up back in July for some Karmann meet discussions etc.

Tempest (longing back to last week ;-) )

P.s Jim I think you did a sterling job of driving Erics car despite the fact you confused the hell out of me when we first met at Harwich, very confusing, so how many times did you grab the door handle when you went to change gear? 8)

The parts are already ordered, but it takes always a time if you let produce special parts  . I got the possibilty to get a clutch suitable for 450 ft-lbs. The other parts (special built hybrid turbo and special built pump) will take also at least up to the mid of november. Of Course the complete engine will have to be disassembled and strongend. But then you'll have to have about 400bhp in an petrol corrado to follow me  . The torque will be about 420ft-lbs @ about 3000rpm and up from 1400 - 5000 always more than 320ft-lbs. If someone is still thinking a diesel is not worth being built in a corrado, he is not informed or just drunken . You can't compare a stock tdi with a tuned one. My actual engine lost at about 4,5second in fourth in the accelarationtime between the stock 90hp and the last driven 160hp. In fourth gear the stock time 38-63mph was 9,4 and tuned 4,9.In fifth 50mph-75mph 14,2 stock and 7,8 tuned. All driven with 17" rims. So even if you drive a well tuned g60 you still have the feeling that's something broken down. So, I'll have to go with my Ibiza on the "competition", just to have the biggest (torque) in the shortest (car) that day.

but I think the next two years it will not be possible

Shame, as there's quite a bit going on here in the VW and Corrado-scene as well.

I'm sorry for that, but I don't want to promise something wrong. Believe me, I'd like to come over again one time.

"Hi are you Eric?" - "No, i'm just driving his car.." :D

No door handle grabbage but I did quite often move my hand across to where the gearstick should have been only to just thump my hand into the door card - seemed to happen most often when slowing down after a sustained period of driving! :)

I had the smack-hand-into-doorcard-instead of gear knob quite a lot when I drove zarman's car in Toronto. I was ok when I thought about it, but as soon as I was moving off from lights going into second and watching the traffic, I'd just smack the door card, curse, switch hands and get the right hand on the knob (ooh err)

I am so going next year though...

As if you are not going through enough 'I want another Corrado' symptoms Jim without driving Chri's and Eric's!

Or did the trip get it out of your system for a while?

If there is a Karman trip next year how about going down/up/over to the 'ring as well so we can all have a blat around?

We've talked about doing the same trip next year and including the The Nurburgring into the proceedings.. i'm desperate to go there!

And yeah, driving those cars hasn't exactly helped with my Corrado urgings! Erics G60 was really cool and it was fun driving one again, but that VR6.. gawd, the noise and the way it drives.. I want one :|

Yeh I'm definately up for another trip next year especially with the Nurburgring included, we'd have to do it after an early night though, not with the echos of Timmmeeeee in our heads, I've also been invited to the Nurburgring in August 8), I've got to say the VRs engine noise is rather addictive, dint get to go in Erics car so I can't comment

450 ft-lbs

Erm, Zoran, I might have lived in the UK for 14 years by now (is it that long already  ?), but having been educated in Germany, I still don't know what these blasted imperial units mean , as I'm all metric :-) I suppose it's a lot, though

If someone is still thinking a diesel is not worth being built in a corrado, he is not informed or just drunken

Well, judging by my state at the Karmann meet I was drunk  On a more serious note, your plans do sound very promising, and I'm sure the engine will be mental in the end, looking at the proposed figures. I'm sure many a TDi Rado owner here (I suppose there aren't that many anyway ...) will be very interested in the end result :-) It's just that tiny little detail of the engine sound that I would need to get used to: It just sounds strange, hearing a tractor-like engine sound emerging from a Rado engine bay ;-)

Good luck with beating the Rado-boys in your Ibiza then ;-)

I'd like to come over again one time

Grab a cheap flight, weekend trip, ask Dirk for details, he's been there, done it, worn the T-shirt and ... enjoyed it, I think ;-)

I'd just smack the door card, curse, switch hands and get the right hand on the knob (ooh err)

Beginner  apart from the knob bit, I'm sure

As I said earlier, you simply get used to it, I even have no problems any more switching between my 2 LHD and 1 RHD plus the company's RHD Escort delivery van any more, well apart from the Escort, of course, but that's for totally different reasons  I suppose, if I had another in-depth chat with Zoran, we could finally get that stupid diesel van to be a bit faster , all in the interest of getting to our customers faster :-)

A trip to the Nürburgring next year (if there's another Karmann trip, that is), will need careful planning, as it's quite a distance away from Karmann in Osnabrück.

dint get to go in Erics car so I can't comment

Simple, G60s all the way for me :-)

It's about 610Nm Eric, I think the journey from Osnabruck to the Nurburgring would be a two dayer with an overnight stay? 8)

Took 9 months when I did that 1999 as it's more work on the UK peeps to get organised rather than relying on the De's. In the end we had to cut out N as it's quite a haul down to there, not that I'm advocating "don't do it". Just will need more than Eric to organise. If you guys are serious about it, then planning starts in 3 months time for next June with a little team of at least 3 doing the reserach and ideas. Cos a fair bit of the headache is timing everything to sequence during the week or 10 days you are out there. Bit like building a house or extension. Get the order wrong and it screws up.

You should consider going to some of the VW factories on the way. They all have official tour guides/centres and are bookable well in advance. Nice guy at the Salzgitter engine plant. Quite a feast to see a floor 400 ft by 200ft full of V5's stacked ready for shipment.

I was knackered after the 1999 one I did and there were 3 of us doing the leg work.

Stayed in small Hotels which are nice & cheap in most of Germany, Jim will like that!

Just my 2p's worth.

Chris, it's not the volume of planning work perse, although you are right, it is tiring. Even I was a bit amazed how tired I was after the trip, but that might have just been down to the party atmosphere on the actual camping site, or it's my old age  Driving a car associated with age range 20-30, and being 36 doesn't help make me younger

The biggest problem I see is getting enough people together who can/want to take enough time off work at the same time. Plus the costs involved, if you then throw in a popular UK event like Ed38, it'll be very difficult to get the numbers. I'm glad that that many folks did join me though despite these factors :notworthy:

At this point of time I must admit that I'm not quite sure yet whether I'll be going next year, as it for me to a large extend depends on the actual event around Karmann (chance to meet up with my German mates again), whether it'll take place again etc. That depends on Karmann themselves, the contacts within Karmann etc. Karmann on the other hand are notorious for leaving these things right to the last minute just like last year and this year. It was only to the end of July that Karmann allowed us access to both the factory and the car collection. Before that, it wasn't even sure, whether we were welcome at all!!

I will stay in touch with Martin and co. possibly also with Breford (now someone do Breford a favour and buy his Rado, FFS! serious though: see Cars for Sale thread, ultrarare Corrado.), whom I've had some good chats with :-)

Coming back to the request for translation of the internal Corrado project completion document (dated 11/1989 BTW): Apart from the highlights which I have already translated on-site, after having read the whole document, I can now confidently say, that there wasn't much else juicy gossip in there. Its contents officially don't exist in public, of course ;-)
