corradovr6sc 0 Posted October 1, 2005 I've recently bought my old car back and everything was running fine. Been out and the car started jerking and stalling but then the engine would pick up again and everything went back to normal. Got home, plugged into vag-com and I've got the following fault code: 00553 mass air flow meter (g70) short to ground intermittent My old friend the airflow meter, I think I'm on my third or fourth. They seem to have a lifespan of about 18 months (on my car anyway). Does this code indicate anything other than a knackered maf, such as a break in the wiring? thanks for your help :)
veeDuB_Rado 0 Posted October 1, 2005 . Got home, plugged into vag-com and I've got the following fault code thanks for your help :) Welcome back mate :D Gets in the blood dont it! Ok, sorry to be off topic here but what does plu into vag-com mean and how do you do it??
Andi 2,147,483,647 Posted October 1, 2005 veeDuB_Rado, use the search! VAG-COM is diagnostic cable + software for VAG cars.
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted October 1, 2005 That's a MAF failure for sure, but check the wiring continuity anyway. MAFs seem to die pretty quickly on charged VRs.
corradovr6sc 0 Posted October 1, 2005 They do seem to fail more often on charged vrs but the hotfilm mafs possibly last a bit longer. Wonder if it's anything to do with running the maf under the wing (such as water penetration)?. I bet they haven't gone down in price much either. I'll check the wiring first then go to my local Bosch dealer to check availability.
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted October 2, 2005 Vince reckons the OBD1 wire MAFs are more hardy than the film ones. I've wrapped my filter in a silicon impregnated rain stop pad and touch wood, I've not had any problems over 3000 miles, including extended journeys in torrential rain....but the inner wing arrangements do need a better design!
