It is ugly in that colour. Midnight Blue, Guards Red or Black looks the bomb!

To be fair, the Beemer is also an awesome machine.

Personally i would have the Porker.

if I was going to spend that much maintaining a car it would have to be a porker rather than a BMW.

as much as I love that 928 I think I love 993s more. If anyone wants to lend me two for comparision please PM :D

no offence but i wouldnt look twice at the 928gts, but its a different matter with the bmw...

each to their own...............just IMHO the 8series has really dated more in 15years than what the 928 has in near enough 30years..................both stunning cars btw,and dinosaurs too

8 series for me too. It's quite a big car physically!

My mate has owned both the 50 and 40 flavours. Hard to say which was better overall as they drove almost identically, but the V12 had more standard equipment. Very thirsty though, I don't think he every bettered 12mpg. The 840 could do about 23mpg on a cruise. The 840 sounded better when revved hard too. Body panels and electrics are the expensive bits, otherwise they're just as pricey to maintain as any other large Bimmer of that period.

I used to love the 928 when I was a kid, but not any more.

I don't recall the 850i having selective cylinder management, my mate certainly never mentioned it. It was quite trick in those days but the Carlton GSi3000 had it though. It shut down 3 cylinders at idle, on over-run and below 2000rpm (IIRC) to save fuel. It basically operated as two 3 cylinder engines.

Kev - you sure the Carlton GSi had cylinder shut off - you got me searching through some books and no one mentions it, mind you no one mentions the old Merc V12 having the same function either!!!!

Back on topic - definitely the Porsche, pretty bulletproof mechanically, that V8 is pretty unstressed, especially when coupled to the Mercedes 5 speed auto, slightly more practical than the BM too - still have a 993 over either of them though

A friend of mine has a 928, although I think it is an earlier model (5 litre V8). Christ, at 80 mph in second, it feels like it'll never stop accelerating. And it black, it looks the dog's b's. I'm with VR6 Storm, I think the BMW has aged pretty poorly, and I was never really a fan when it first came out either.

I'd definitely go for the Porche, and with a bit of luck, one day I will!
