kop10320178 0 Posted December 3, 2005 hi when i start my rado vr6 from cold, i get a real strong smell of petrol inside the car. is it a leak? or is this normal? after about 5 minutes there is no evidence of any smell of petrol. i can not tell by the fuel consumption if it has a leak. if its any help it averages about 340 miles to the tank around the town. thanx jay
Supercharged 2 Posted December 3, 2005 NOT normal... carefully inspect the pipes especially the ends around the clips....

Supercharged 2 Posted December 3, 2005 two black pipes running along the left hand side of the top of the engine - they are the main ones!
RW1 0 Posted December 3, 2005 Also check the small pipe connection onto the fuel rail pressure regulator at the nearside front of the inlet manifold. (Subject to recall in USA as clips allow weepage). .

Supercharged 2 Posted December 3, 2005 RW1, ever seen the O ring on a VR FPR starting to disentegrate?
RW1 0 Posted December 3, 2005 No. But it wouldn't surprise me given the age, higher mileage/useage & heat that it has happened. Problem with all rubbery things under the bonnet on all cars really as they get older. Mother's Type 3 fastback went up in flames that way years ago (12 year old car) when the rubber feed hose split between the pump and carbs. .
Supercharged 2 Posted December 3, 2005 Yeah, thats what we found on Kevcheesewires car earlier... luckily the 3 bits of green had been caught by the socket and not gone into the rail itself...
NickVR6 0 Posted December 3, 2005 Had the same on mine mate, all mentioned above. Mine only leaked when i started it and as soon as it started to warm they re0sealed themselfves. Was the two black rubber pipes going to the fuel rail and it was dripping onto the fan belt tensioner. Start it with the hood open, stop it and go and smell around the ends of the two pipes, bet you thats the culprit. In hind site mine were just a bit fraid at the ends and i could have trimmed them and refitted, but i didnt take any chances and bought two new pipes from vag. Brace youself for the cost of them, you'll be bending over for uncle vw again! £70+ i think, for 2 10 inch long rubber pipes! They come off the fuel rail ok *****WATCH YOURS EYES****** if thres any presure and your doing it your self!!!! Not so easy coming off the bulk head end, had to v carefully stanley them along their length to get them to pull off!!
NickVR6 0 Posted December 3, 2005 Tip from the haywire was to windowlean them to slide on the new ones, worked a treat, but be quick as that stuff dries fast and you dont want um half stuck on.
dinkus 10 Posted December 4, 2005 My guess is those 2 pipes too - I've seen quite a few VRs that have had them replaced. Oh and Nick, it wouldn't be the first time you've bent over for a 10" long bit of rubber ;)
RS VR6 0 Posted December 4, 2005 Before taking off the fuel lines, pull the fuel pump relay and crank the car. This will depressurize the fuel lines. Check where the rubber fuel lines connect to the plastic hardlines that run under the car. Mine is doing the same thing now. If I don't drive the car for a few days...there will be a small puddle of gas on startup. The reason it does that is because on startup...there is a tremedous amount of pressure going into the fuel lines. The fuel lines cost me 50usd at my local dealer. The two rubber fuel lines next to the valver cover. Follow those to the hardlines.
NickVR6 0 Posted December 4, 2005 Dinkus Lol, you cant beat good hose. RS VR6, i cant see the fuel hose my eyes get stuck to the VSR and charger (lucky git!)
NottsCounty 0 Posted January 18, 2006 I had this exact same problem on my VR - it got worse and worse until one day I flicked the bonnet to find a rapid drip coming the longer of the two lines. On closer inspection the pipe that was leaking was attached to the rail by an aftermarket jubilee clip (a jewson jobbie) which was quite obviously not strong enough to hold up to the job (a lot of pressure is forced down the fuel lines) As a temp fix i simply detached the hose, covered it in coke (the drink) reattached the hose and then let it dry. No smell of fuel for a couple of weeks now.
buttles 0 Posted January 18, 2006 Isn't it lucky our cars all do the same thing. One thing I found when mine leaked was the fuel perished the wadding in the fuelpipe channel under the car. Bubblewrap did the trick.
VRTrickster 0 Posted January 18, 2006 Just found the same problem with mine ! Pulled up one day and noticed the smell . Popped the bonnet and located the smell at those pipes, wiggled them slightly and they weeped fuel! I dont suppose any of you lot have fitted some aftermarket fuel line braided say ? What do you think about doing this ? 70 squids is alot when ive just spent 700 on suspension parts !
