Shaking when Braking - Someone please help!!

Recommended Posts

Reason I mention it is I have a dented wheel, which was killing the high speed handling (it's only a tiny tiny dent- the rim deflects by less than 3mm when you spin the wheel!!). I'm waiting for Rams to flog me his spare speedline!!!

I have a dented rear wheel too on the inside of the rim that is clearly evident when they were balancing my new tyres... yet it doesnt affect the handling of the car at all...

One thing that brake guide doesnt mention is when pushing in the pistons in the calipers you MUST un do the bleed nipple before doing this...............

Same here. But it used to be on the front wheel, and it was noticeable then, believe me. Also, in fact, it takes a while before the tyre takes the shape when you fit new tyres.. I swapped front rear a while ago, at the same time as getting new tyres (now on the rear wheels). Next new tyres will go on the fronts.

Just an update on my probs,

My shudder seems to be intermitant at only at certain speeds but not with heavy braking?!Really starting to p1ss me off now as I am not confident in the braking ability of the car even though it has a "good" setup in my opinion?!Ahhhhh...

Help

John

P.S. I haven't tried swapping the wheels around yet,but will do.They are brand new tyres and reasonably new speedlines too as they have little to no curb marks on...

is the face of the hub clean?

Give it a good seeing to with a wire brush. Also, the grub screw that holds the disc to the hub, is that in use?

Make sure the hole in the disc is over the screw even if the head is off the srew.

The above things are worth checking if not done already, but dont really fit your symptoms!

I really cant think what would cause this only at light braking @ 30-40mph, as most brake realated problems are wosre at higher speeds/harder braking.

I supose at high braking there is a greater load on the frwd/bckwd suspension components - this could be removing any play you get on light braking. Is the big bush in the wishbone ok?

I have 2 bugpack ones somewhere, or a new wishbone from VAG with new bushes is only 50 pounds (I have not set up a uk keyboard yet after reinstalling windows - cant find the pound sign  ).

hth - please keep updated us with outcome.

Check the vibration dampener on the driveshaft, big rubber donut looking thing, drivers side driveshaft I think.

It should be secured but if you can slide it up and down easily then it will be causing vibrations, easy solution, cut it off. Dont be fooled by the rubber apearance though, its metal inside and can be a right pita to get off.

Well I'm back - after a long absence - now have a greater problem which I think may be tied to the shaking one. My C is still shaking when I brake - getting quite concerned now but to top it all off - when I brake (and now accelerate) it feels like the steering wheel is moving from left to right. It also feels like the car is skating from left to right and that I have minimal control over it.

Does this have anything to do with the shaking bit or is this an entirley new problem which I am gonna have to address pretty sharpish??

I was thinking wheel alignment??

Cheers All

Personally I think I'd have booked it into a VW specialist for a look at by now..!!

If it's vibrating that badly it's got to be affecting your ability to steer and stop your expensive lump of metal, and also your ability to keep you and yours from being embedded in the back of another lump of metal (or worse).

And even if all this isn't true, then it's certainly effecting your enjoyment of your expensive lump of metal, and for me that's enough to get it fixed.

If it was a Vauxhall and the steering vibrated, so what? It would handle crap anyway. But it's not, it's a very fine handling car when it's working, and it's very very noticeable when it's not working, so get it fixed!! :)

I had been thinking my C was not "right" for a couple of weeks. Took it to get the tracking checked. Lo and behold, it was 0.25 degrees out!! If 0.25 degrees is noticeable then...

Had a similar problem when braking, but have just changed the front discs and pads, and it's gone :D

Well, there we go - problem solved. ALL disks were mashed and my attempt to check them myself with a DTI could have been more sucesfull if I did it with a blindfold, no arms and on a different car!

The VW garage checked her over on the rolling road etc. Turns out also that the Anti Roll bushes need replacing - not sure on that one but it would explain the annoying clunking I get in the back of the car.

On a less positive note - Got my C back form the garage to find my VR6 badge gone!! when asked where it was, was told that it could have been like that when I brought it in - no appology - no offer of a free badge - had to fight to get one on order (and a red one at that!!)

Still - whinge time over. Cheers to everyone who posted on this epic query - no doubt I will be back with another issue soon enough!! :D
