Vibration in pedal and wheel under braking

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Tried a search but nothing cropped up, so asking here...

Under 40 / 50mph it's not really noticeable, but at Mway speeds there is quite a lot of vibration thru the brake pedal and the steering wheel, almost as tho' the wheels are really imbalanced (but only get it under braking).

Car had new pads and brakes last year.

Jacked it up...calipers didn't appear to be wobbly / loose. Haven't had the wheels off yet as waiting for the locking wheel nut bolt to be posted...

Previous owner mentioned this, but not sure what he meant, and he couldn't explain furthur...can probably get hold of the mechanic if needs be:

"

My mechanic is on holiday, but believes that 2 small rubber stops for the

brakes need replacing (cheap & easy) just to remove a slight brake judder

(as he did discs last year, so should not be these).

"

I did notice that when jacked up, the top of the suspension shocks seemed free to move about in the turret, and there were not the bolts (or even holes for bolts) that you normally seem to get on cars in the top mount type area...assuming this is normal ?

Any ideas welcome ! Chrs, Dan

PS - Presume no ABS on an 1989 16v from reading this forum ?

Most likely cause has *got* to be warped disks .. despite the recent replacement.

What type were they replaced with?

It usually is the discs if the vibration occurs only under braking... are they badly scored at all? or that they may not be flat to the hub face... no idea what the rubber stops thing is about...

The top mounts sound knackered - they are a rubber bush with a bearing bonded into them, if the shock moves from side to side then they need replacing asap!

ABS - you probably don't but there are various ways to tell, the ABS valve block and pump is a fairly big unit mounted just to the back of the gearbox, also the cables for the sensors connect at the top of the suspension turret and you should have an ABS light in the centre console...

I have a very similar problem with my mk2 vr,

however the brakes are all brand new brembo 305 setup, and did it also on my g60 280mm setup

i will be replacing the bottom ball joints hopefully tomorrow night as 2 vw specialist have said it'd be the bottom ball joints.

I used to have the same problem, now its sorted out.

It was the brakes and the shoes in my case.

If it still does gives the problem, you should have a look at the wish bones.

Hope you get this sorted out, as I found the vibrations increasingly annoying.

Alan

increasingly annoying doesn't come anywhere near to how i feel about it at the moment!

its had new poly bushes, replaced the steering rack, new tie rods and ends, runs on koni shocks and new H&R springs, brand new brembo setup, only things that it can be now is the bottom ball joints although they were new gsf items not so long ago, top mounts but again fairly new gsf items not so long ago or wheel bearings which dont hum and no play in anyway

I reckon mine is a bent flange...

I've spent all evening looking into the problem. everything is tight ie subframe and wishbones, no play in bottom ball joints,

i have a spare set of hubs which i know are good i can try tomorrow, so will do that!

will let you know my findings!

I had this exact problem not long ago. New front discs fixed it, and it's alot nicer to drive because of it. :) Could be worth putting a wanted post up.

Well mine is sorted,

Play in the front near side hub bearing/flange, very strange as there was no humming or noises from the bearing, and were new only a few years ago...
