yet another corrado pulling to the left

Recommended Posts

i know looking at a lot of topics there are a lot on corrado's pulling to the left but can you advise me on mine.

- my corrado actually goes round sweeping bends without me having to steer

- Just had the mot, and asked them to check the ball joints and track rod ends (all ok)

- top suspension mounts ok.

- Tyres correct (direction and pressures) all ok

- had the camber then the tracking checked by a vw specialist (all spot on)

suggestion from specialist - he has known steering racks to do this, may be worth changing.

can any one help!!!

Mine has the same problem (and others - lurching left/right when there's so much as a piece of gravel on the road!), even after fitting new steering arms, bushes, balljoints, track rod ends, full suspension, top mounts and rear bumpstops. Spoken to a few mechanics since and the general consensus is the steering rack is knackered, apparantly there's a PAS fluid valve in it that's probably sticking and unfortunately it's not replaceable on its own so you have to get a new rack.

If the steering is heavier in one direction than the other then it's definitely the rack because you've outruled everything else.

The VR ZF racks seem to be biting bullets left right and centre at the moment! Mine's on it's second and soon to be third!

Here we go again..... I have the same along with the clicking (in another thread). Basically the VR rack is sh1te. Never had any problems with my G60 rack, but since I put the 24v in and the VR6 steering set-up its getting worse. Is there another rack that would fit? or could be made to fit easily...

If the steering is heavier to one side it doesn't mean its the rack. The poise of the car on the road will determine that.If standing stationary and turning the rack side to side and its heavier one way then yes its the rack.

But if the geometry is out it will wonder to one side.

cheers for the input, the mechanic reckoned the steering is heavier turning to the right on stand still than steering it to the left, i sometimes think i can notice it but it is not much. The pulling got worse when i had the tracking done. but i havve this done again since and made it no worse or better.

i thought i read somewhere that you couldn't adjust the rear of car for alignment.

as for steering rack compatibility if it helps any one the mechanic said the following:

seat toledo 16v

vw golf/vento vr6

i have a 1995 vr6 by the way hence the vr6 racks

The rear camber is not adjustable but where its bolted to the floor it is adjustable.(forgot the word) So that's why four wheel alignment is a good thing.

If you mechanic said its harder to turn standing still then it might be the rack.

Well all I can say is I had pretty much ALL of the steering components replaced on my '95 115k mile VR6, and the only one that actually changed the feel of the steering in ANY WAY was the steering column.

[ Apart from the knackered track rods I had on it for six months, but they were replaced under warranty with real VW ones and the car was back to feeling like it did when I got it. They clunked like barstewards due to seized inner ball joints... ]

how much did it cost to get the steering rack done - garage quoted me £150 plus parts (£50 - second hand rack)

That's what I meant and you can feel it on the road aswell, nowt to do with 'poise'. I should know as I've been there and got the T shirt.

He's had his geometry checked and it checked out OK.

Rear camber *is* adjustable. You shim the appropriate stub axle bolts.

Sounds about right, it's quite an involved job.

Shimming the appropriate stub axel bolts is not a true adjustable camber .just bodging what's already bent.

He also said he has had camber and tracking done...yes on the front or the back aswell?

Merry Christmas.

If it does the job.....

Who knows, I doubt a full 4 wheel alignment was done.

And a Happy New Year to you :-)

Dr_Mat, yes that is my 8000sq ft kitchenette :-) Was just testing the camera in my new phone....

well I have a mk4 steering rack which I might have a look at whilst I have the front of the car in bits.

I should be able to tell straight away if it will fit or not.

I will report back over christmas

I looked at the MK4 rack and it was very different as from memory its very tall where the column joins to it. However I didn't actually put it up against the VR one at the time....

your correct i don't know for sure if i had a four wheel alignment was checked or adjusted but my mechanic is pretty good so i made the assumption he would check all four.

it will be interesting to see if the mk4 fits in any way!

Yeah I'd be interested to know what work is required getting a MK4 rack into a VR too.....or how about an electric rack from a MK5 R32? Can do away with the PAS system then :-)

I had car up on ramps today and noticed that one of the boots to the steering rack has slipped off, before this goes back on properly, just like to check if theres a specific grease to repack it with....

Def be interested to see what other racks will fit a vr.... 8)
