Last Hope for the vr6

Recommended Posts

Hi there i got a vr6 in june and i love the car apart from all the money and problems it has caused.

It has been everywhere and nobody knows whats wrong with it.

When i got the car it was fine got it in england drove 300 miles home to glasgow.

The car was fine then 3 months ago i ran out of petrol. Doh!!

Wouldnt start up.

AA said it was the fuel pump relay.

Changes the fuel pump relay. Still wouldnt start.

VW ran a dignostic test and found nothing and said it might be my ecu in the mean time ran a earth from the battary to the relay so i could start the car.

Then the engine was lacking in performance and overfueling. stuttering and would not go through the rev range and put out major power.

A vw specialist called bedrock veedubs did a fuel pressure test it was fine. pulled out my injectors which were black and no6 was gub'd. Got them cleaned and refurbed. Then they inform me that my fuel pump isnt working. fine changed it.

Car was performing fine until later that night.

same thing happened with the performance eventualy the car broke down again. AA said it looks like a ecu problem. Got it towed away and got a new ecu and the wiring loom rewired.

by this point im pretty skint.

again was fine until later that night. Found a hole in my downpipe before the lamda sensor and replaced both as the hole could not be welded. The fuel filter and new spark plugs have also been changed.

Please help before i kill my corrado.

I can only think that it is my air flow meter or coil pack.

Any ideas because im going to put it back in to vw

Cheers

fraz_Vr6, probably nor related at all, but i had all sorts of problems with mine after running out of petrol now you mention it.

it seemed to run on 5 cylinders or something. felt like about 40 bhp and didn't want to rev or anything.

it did this on and off, then permanently for about 2 weeks! then i absolutely booted it one day and it cleared and revved its nuts off.

it starts to do similar occasionally still, but if i just hammer it for a minute it clears

wierd

PS. i have changed coil pack, leads and plugs :(

the bonus is, when it clears on the ocassions it still does it, it then feels like a fekin veyron compared to how it had been running :)

that sounds very much like one of your plugs is oiling up,then burning off and starts firing again

thats what i thought at one point.

then someone said that doesn't actually happen.

but yeh, it does sound like it fits eh?

what do your plugs look like?they can tell you a lot of what's going on in the engine. Fit a new set, run it for a while, then take then out and have alook att hem (remebering which one came from which port of course)

checked your compressions?

I fitted new plugs today and the old ones were very dirty probably beacuse im overfueling. probably why its not performing.

fraz_Vr6, if i were you, dont spend anymore money just tow it to Stealth and they'll sort it out. probably your cheapest option even though it may NOT be cheap to get it sorted. Good luck.

well if you stop spending money randomly, and actually try and work out whats wrong it won't cost you much.

as opposed to just checking the plugs as they come out, do a plug chop which will give a true indication of how the car is fuelling under load or at an rpm other than idle. See guide below for bike application, but it gets the idea across.

TBH though, as phat says, I think your stabbing around in the dark and have spent a lot of money, with the benefit of hindsight - on bad advice from supposed experts. Stealth are the boys but logistically a nightmare distance wise.

I would have suspected your injectors due to the fact you ran out of fuel and your plugs were manky when they came out - I would have replaced as opposed to overhaul them - if sh1t was dragged through, they may no longer be blocked but damaged from whatever debris was in them.

the fact that everything occurred when you ran out of petrol obviously suggests this was the root cause and fuel pumps going, ecu problems etc sem unlikely unless you've been very unlucky with a nasty coincidence occurring at the time you ran out of fuel

Q. What is a Plug Chop and How do I do it.?

A. Plug Chops are what you do to tell which rpm range is rich or lean if you don't have an Oxygen or Gas sensor.

Basically you run the engine under load, (some do it at a certain rev range e.g. idle, 2000-3500, 3500-4500 etc) however...

It is MUCH BETTER to make marks on your Kill Switch casing at 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, Full (WFO) and put a pin in your throttle rubber so you can calibrate the throttle position, NOT the rev range)

Then hit the kill switch, wait for the bike to cool, take out your plugs and "read" them for soot (Rich), Colour, Aluminium Bits (bad).

Waiting for them to cool is recommended by most people due to Thermal Temp Diff. around plug threads. So it can be a Long term thing and a Royal PITA. An Idle Plug Chop is easy, because you do it every day, when you turn off your engine.

START with NEW Plugs or you'll fool yourself.

Hitting the "Kill Switch" is called "chopping" the plugs as you get the colour they are at that range, rather than at idle, which is where you normally turn off your engine (right?).

Take out your plugs and check the Colour. Generally a nice "Tan" colour in the rpm range you are testing, is what you are looking for. Lamb Chops are tastier though.

See this very good site http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/spkplghnbook.htm for a guide to Reading Plugs and Plugs in general.

See the Exhaust Rejetting Spreadsheet for additional performance-related Spark Plug Issues.

I had simular running badly problems on my 1992 vr6 golf

it was traced to valve stem seals being wron and the plugs becoming oiled up.

I had left the car ito the dealers and they told me it was going to cost a grand in parts and not be a guarinteed fix.

I rang stealth and ordered a set of leads and went to the local bosch guy and got a set of plugs.

I changed them and it ran fine, but what would happen is sometimes you could feel it starting to oil up so all you could do is grab a low gear and nail it and it blew the excess oil out of the bore.

This is not a fix, but it is diagnosis of the problem, the fix a top end rebuild.

The other issue that i have seen is the fuel pump effectivly pack in, it seems to be fine, but then just dies, the way we tested this to get a line and run it from the pump feed to a bucket or petrol can and see its pumping properly.

then put the line back on and get someone with a fuel pressure guage to check to see if it is maintaining fuel pressure or not.

Neither of these will cost a lot.

The VR6 motor is a great one and once you iron out the bugs you will start to enjoy it

from experience, i would say (without having a look at the car) that it could be your air flow meter. Sounds like there is too much air getting into the engine and therefore, it is burning a lot of fuel to try and compensate for this.
