VR6 Oil Leak

Hi all, I'm looking to buy my 1st Corrado, a 95 Storm with 75k on the clock. I got an engineers report and it's thrown up a few issues, the most worrying being engine oil leaks. Here's what the report says about it:

"Aged well-established oily telltales at sump gasket and surrounds; one leak appears to emanate from frontal aspect of engine low down and another at head-gasket face offside end; See mudding around head face. Care should the cylinder heads ultimately have to be removed for such a leak the costs involved are very high and approximate to £1000."

 

Does it look like I'm in for a hefty repair bill soon if I go ahead and buy it?

I wouldn't be overly worried by the report of oil leaks - it's a 10 year old car, so a bit of oil here & there is to be expected. As long as there are no drops of oil on the ground after it's had a run & been stopped a while, I wouldn't be too concerned.

 

By all means try and beat him down with the RAC report, but I wouldn't say it was a deal-breaker. The first thing I'd do would be to change the oil cooler as IME they are prone to going at around 80K miles.

 

All 3 of my VR's have slight oil leaks where this one does, but they all run perfectly and use no oil to speak of. 2 are on 84K & one's on 153K miles!

Although I know nothing about Vr6 engines, I would have to say that if I was buying any Corrado for £7k i'm not sure i'd want an inspection report to read like that. It doesn't exactly inspire confidence, you don't want to be worrying about anything when spending £7k.

 

I know it's a storm , so is worth a bit more than a 'normal' VR6, but still, it's at the top end of the raddo price scale and there's a few around to be found without problems i'm sure..(even if they're red)

 

 

and this storm, whoever's selling it.... ..I'd pm Rado16v if interested by the looks of things...

What would be a fair price for the car do you reckon? It also needs new brake discs, mid box and rear shocks soon too.

Worst/best case scenarios, what kind of money could I be looking at to put it right?

None of those parts are particularly expensive, it depends where you buy the parts from and who fits them really. VW dealers are hellishly expensive labour wise, VW specialists are much more reasonable. If you're talking discs and pads all round, I'd look for sub £400, maybe £500 fitted including the mid box and shocks. To be honest with you, none of the work sounds major, its just routine stuff that wears out when a car gets older. The worrying thing is the price, for that money I'd expect it to be top notch, new MOT, full VW history, no faults whatsoever even then its expensive in the current climate, as Walesy says check out the classifieds on this forum.

Sorry to keep throwing examples up, and I know it's a grand more than the one you're looking at but this from the ebay section on here looks stunning...worth paying a premium for the right car.
