veeDuB_Rado 0 Posted March 10, 2006 How old are the HT leads?
snake16valve 0 Posted March 10, 2006 I dont know how old they are sorry. Would you suggest that i have them changed ?
veeDuB_Rado 0 Posted March 10, 2006 I dont know how old they are. Do you think a should change them before anything else ? See if anyone you know near you has a set on their 16v engine so you can try first, before you go out buying a set, just to see if they're the cause. snake16valve 0 Posted March 10, 2006 My next door neigbour has a golf gti 8 valve. Would his leads fit ?
veeDuB_Rado 0 Posted March 10, 2006 I'm not too sure about that to be honest, will have to wait and see if someone else can confirm this. Have you taken off the distributor atall? Maybe your timing belt has skipped a few teeth maybe. Just see if the leads are the prob though first.
snake16valve 0 Posted March 10, 2006 The guy i bought the car from changed the plugs & dizzy cap in november. Why he never done the leads is beyond me ! My neighbour is having a look in the morning. I will keep you posted. Thank's again for the help..

andy 0 Posted March 10, 2006 9/10 faults (nearly!) are HT related, run the car up in the dark and open the bonnet and look in, see if you can see any sparks anywhere...its a good start
snake16valve 0 Posted March 10, 2006 Ok m8 thank's for that. I will go try that just now.
snake16valve 0 Posted March 10, 2006 Hi andy. cant see any sparks from the ht leads. Or anywhere else. Any more suggestions ?
bcstudent 0 Posted March 10, 2006 Does the car still run badly or did the fault come and go?
snake16valve 0 Posted March 11, 2006 Hi there. The car is running terrible at the moment..no power ! When the car is ticking over is sounds like it has only got 3 cylinders. It takes a life time just to get to 60 mph.
bcstudent 0 Posted March 11, 2006 While it's running, disconnect one plug lead at a time. You should be able to tell if any of the cylinders aren't firing if removing a lead has no effect on the way it's running. If that test shows a non-firing cylinder (or two) it'll likely be either a lead or the distributor cap at fault. If all cylinders are firing then maybe the crankshaft pulley key has sheared and screwed up the cam timing. Check the timing marks all line up for a start. snake16valve 0 Posted March 11, 2006 Thank's to everyone for there help. But unfortunatley still no joy. What else can i try ? Blocked injectors or maybe a dirty air filter ???
snake16valve 0 Posted March 11, 2006 No luck yet ! Got new dizzy cap and plugs. Guess what (still the same). Could it be possible that it is getting starved of fuel ? If my injectors where blocked would the car still run ?
veeDuB_Rado 0 Posted March 11, 2006 What about the timing belt skipping a few teeth? If you tried all the basics, then worst thing is could be that the head is gone :\
vwcorrado 0 Posted March 11, 2006 there is not a point in your rev range when it runs as it should?? coil???
snake16valve 0 Posted March 11, 2006 No. It is pure flat all through the rev range. It drives like a 1.1 fiesta....
snake16valve 0 Posted March 12, 2006 Hi guys me again ! Anyone any idea how much for a new coil ?
bcstudent 0 Posted March 12, 2006 About £4 from Halfords while stocks last. Be quick. I highly doubt it's your problem though.
snake16valve 0 Posted March 12, 2006 cheers..
veeDuB_Rado 0 Posted March 12, 2006 Yea if you can't seem to eliminate the problem with the basics changed, then go for a compression test to see if your head has blown..
snake16valve 0 Posted March 12, 2006 Ok thank's.. If that is the case will that cost alot to get it fixed ? And would it be worth fixing it or would i be better off scrapping the car ?
veeDuB_Rado 0 Posted March 12, 2006 Depends on the value of the car really. To get a head fixed can cost around 300-400, it is possible to do yourself but it's probably a pain to do.
