davidwort 0 Posted April 21, 2006 Thought all VW car names came from the names of winds Polo????....Golf???? Golf is from the Gulf Stream Polo... dunno, but it didn't start life as a VW at all, it was originally a cheap version of the Audi 50. to me, Golf is a sport whereby you hit a small ball with a club. as for Polo......isn't that a mint?? What's a Sharan to you then? Flog 0 Posted April 21, 2006 What's a Sharan to you then? The name Sharan is derived from a Persian word meaning "Carrier of Kings" according to wikipedia Also Scirocco - Hot North African desert wind that blows into Italy Original name was rumored to be Blizzard. Golf - Gulf stream winds (a high altitude North-south 100 mmph wind) Jetta - Jet stream (East/West wind, affecting Pacific air travel) Passat - Trade winds Vento - Blowing/windy (E/I) Polo - ? Santana - Hot desert blast accross the Sea of Cortez. Corrado - Not a wind, it's derived from Spanish Correr which means to run. The original name for the car was Taifun (Typhoon) which means huricane except it was already a registered trade mark for a GM truck. Eos is the mother of wind Bora is a cold, dry wind that blows above the Adriatic

greenbeltvr6 0 Posted April 21, 2006 D'you think the Polo could be something to do with polar winds? Alternatively, the famous mints are a laxative in large doses!
bristolbaron 10 Posted April 21, 2006 the association with polo and winds are the door seals on my MK3 were never quite perfect, so a cold blow and wind noise would leak through the seal. however, i cannot confirm this is how the MK1 polo was named.
